Model Y Long Range Rear Wheel Drive (LR RWD)

I have no interest in any car, gas or electric, with a max range of 244 miles. If I wanted a car for around home and small trips this would be fine. But I only want to buy one car and it has to work for road trips too. My existing gas car can go 420 miles. 244 miles is not competitive with that. Range is the number one thing for me although I REALLY want to go electric. 326 miles is almost enough but a slightly cheaper, slightly longer range RWD MY would make me actually switch from gas to Tesla.

I don't need it now and will wait - maybe a 4680 version next year will be better in other ways as well as having enough range.

oh yeah - to be clear I wasn't trying to say how many miles you need or is adequate. I totally respect that everyone's distance needs are different (I actually never leave town, so ..). Your original post included something about X miles for Y price. Seems like Tesla is still better or at the competition for miles per dollar.

I just keep hoping that Tesla really starts to make some public announcements for people who have plans for the model Y long range rear-wheel drive... Otherwise how long do they expect to keep your $2,500 deposit from nearly 2 years ago?

Tesla CAN make LR MY RWD for $45k and 350 miles range.

They can.
But for some reason that nobody knows they just don`t want it.
They would sell that car like hotcakes .

My only explanation is it would mess up sales of their current models, AWD and even M3 - MX sales.
Most people would buy just that model and other cars would suffer

I think you're exactly right. I'm cancelling my order and getting my 2500 back. I'll reorder when they have a car I want.

You might not want to do the math on how much you would have made on Tesla stock instead of holding a pre-order for 2 years.

For me its time to *sugar* or get off the pot. Go LR AWD or SR RWD. I think Elon has spoken. This new trim level aligns MY with M3 so we kinda should have seen it coming. More range would have been nice, but I live in CA where winter is mild and superchargers are plentiful.

I'll hold out maybe one more quarter to confirm the heated steering wheel that my wife must have, then bring home a new MY.

I'm hanging onto my reservation.
I'm hoping for a free upgrade to the AWD, or else that the LR RWD will benefit from more feature and technology advances.

I chose the LR RWD 7 seater because I wanted to delay delivery (since I have go a Model 3 a year ago as an interim vehicle). I'll wait a while longer.

The discount we got for advance ordering is worth a lot more than getting back the $2500 right now.

I ordered model Y LR RWD in Nov 2019. I just got a call a couple of hours back from Tesla asking me to complete my profile so that VIN can be assigned and I will get the car in 2-5 weeks.. I confirmed with the representative that it is LR AWD. The price at the time of order was $49K (white+white). The same white+white for LR AWD today is $51K. At the time of ordering, the range for AWD was < 300miles and (i think) the price difference was more than $2K. I am in Austin, TX so no snow or mountains but tempted to choose AWD as the price difference is not too much and range has improved. Thoughts?

I understand that people were expecting a LR RWD, and there had been a LR RWD model 3.
But, at this point, I think it’s safe to say there won’t be a LR RWD. It doesn’t seem to be a good enough strategy for Tesla to put out 4 variants of the Y. Maybe in a couple years?

There is nothing "safe" when it comes to Tesla.

They think SR model will sell and compete with VW and Ford, forgetting they are still cheaper for 8-11k after rabates.
44k is a lot for just city car.

LR RWD will be out VERY soon, after they release LR AWD is not selling as expected and SR RWD is not enough.

Only other option i can see LR AWD will come down in price, maybe for 3-4k

I dunno why people keep saying this. If that were the case, my order page on tesla.com would not say 'Long Range Rear Wheel Drive', as it currently, right now, still does.

I'm still waiting as work-from-home will continue for another 6-9 months i expect. And i don't feel safe doing roadtrips now.

I absolutely agree. I have a LEMR model 3 that was supposed to be 260 range. After a year, max range is 234, and at 80% it is 190ish. I run a quick errand and I'm at 150 for the rest of the day. Not good. I'm not going to make the same mistake and go with at 244 Model Y that becomes 175 or substantially less with any weather issues on an 80% charge.

350 LR RWD is what I'll wait for. Otherwise no sale. All he had to do was offer it for a couple of weeks and then pull it... I think it is wrong that he took people's money for that trim and hasn't made it yet.

I get he's trying to get people to limp in to the model Y, but he's dissing his higher margin customers.

Given Elon's remarks just a few months ago that they see 300 miles as minimum range for the Y, I suspect they have found themselves to be battery constrained. With a given battery supply they can make more SR's than LR's.

I'll hold my LR RWD until March to see what happens with the EV credits and the upgrades to the Headlights, HEPA Filters, and Center Console for the Model Y. If some of that stuff happens I may upgrade to LR AWD as I kind of want to get the Acceleration Boost as well...

I hope everyone show some respect to us who placed the LR RWD order for (more than) one year and still waiting. I mean, don't just suggest us to switch to SR, say LR is not necessary or SR is good value, or ask us to give up. There's reason that we are still waiting, not because we want to get cheap version, not because we don't know AWD exists.
For my point of view, I still hope there's LR RWD, even by the end of this year. If not, at least I would want to upgrade to AWD with at most the price diff at the time order was placed. Therefore, I will not change my order, and will not accept if I would get the offer downgraded. If both above options are not available, I would start considering if I should get Tesla, maybe consider Lucid or other brand.

Called them again this morning.. And another specialist said LR RWD is not available.. not sure why they reached out me about the reservation and did not mention that earlier. i am going to hold on to my reservation for some more time. And since LR AWD price drop has happened since i ordered LR RWD and since range for AWD has increased .. I might just get it switch to it after a month of waiting. Will wait to see how 7 seats looks in person and might even get that for occasional utility.

I combed through the sub-forums for the 3, as well as on Reddit, but wanted to see if anyone here has any additional inputs on the matter.

I reserved my LR RWD back in January 2020 - we live in Southern California, and have needed/wanted AWD once in the past 10 years, so we felt like the LR RWD was the best choice for us - would get similar, if not more, miles than the LR AWD, and it should be (slightly) cheaper than the LR AWD.

In August 2020, we retired my old Prius, which had nearly 175K miles, and was exhibiting some issues w/ the ABS system (while our mechanic was able to make a temporary repair, he warned me that it was a potential sign of a more serious problem, which might return in a few months, and it would cost several thousand dollars to replace the entire ABS system). Due to the pandemic, I have been working from home, and my wife's on a leave of absence until April 2021, so we have been fine with one vehicle.

Since Tesla's CEO had tweeted in July that a "LR single motor Y" would be offered "in a few months," we figured the LR RWD would be available prior to my wife's return to work. However, with the recent release of the SR RWD, we fear the LR RWD may never be introduced, or it will be introduced long after my wife has returned to work in-person.

My commute (pre-COVID) was approximately 100 miles roundtrip - from Orange County, California to Riverside/San Bernardino county, so the SR RWD will get me to and from work, even assuming I get nowhere near 244 miles of range, although I would have to be more judicious about running errands after work (unless I supercharge in between). Obviously, I've got a bit of range anxiety (I gas up my wife's car if we get down to around 100 miles of range on the computer), even though we already have a plug in our garage, i.e., we can basically plug in every evening.

Assuming the LR RWD is not produced by the time my wife returns to work, we need to make a decision - SR RWD (244 miles) or LR AWD (324 miles). As noted, 244 miles will get me to and from work with a miles to spare. If we ever do a road trip, we can take my wife's SUV (we do have three kids under 7, so her SUV may be more comfortable anyway), or we can just supercharge along the way. Also, we keep asking ourselves - are the additional 80 miles (0.5 second faster acceleration, and AWD) worth the additional $8,000?

Money is not the ultimate issue here. While we could put that $8,000 to other uses, e.g., some home renovations, investments, a rainy day fund, or the kids' college fund, we are fortunate enough that we have the can afford the LR AWD without having to sacrifice other things, and my wife and I both agree more range is always better, but we are still trying to think about this purchase in a logical manner.

I know there are people on this forum that have chosen to upgrade from the LR RWD to the LR AWD. However, with the recent introduction of the SR RWD, has anyone debated whether to go w/ the SR RWD v. the LR AWD? If so, would love to get your thoughts on how you ultimately came to your decision. Thanks!
