Model Y Performance and winter tires

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
The TSportline description states that the the wheels will fit the Performance Model Y. The Tires you selected only have a speed rating of T (maximum rated speed is 118 MPH). The top speed of the Performance Model Y is 155 MPH. That said, there aren't many winter tires that have a speed rating of W (168 MPH) or Y (186 MPH) speed rating, a V speed rating is only 149 MPH. If you want to purchase the Continential VIKINGCONTACT 7 tire ask the Tire Rack advisor if they would be a good choice in a 19" winter tire for the Performance Model Y with 19" wheels.

You need Y tires if you have a YP. I would not use T tires on a YP unless you are sure you will never top out over 118mph. I bet you did not put in the trim level of Performance to get a T tire. I have not been able to get one of those to show once I tell Tirerack it is a performance version Y.

I just put on T sportline TSS 19s with Michelin x-ice snow rubber. So far so good.

Hi guys, new to the forum. I have a MYP up here in Tahoe and have been told by Tesla Reno that no 20" or 21" wheels will fit over the calipers. Are they just being difficult to try and sell me different car? I need to find a winter tire solution ASAP. I was going to try and find someone who was interested in swapping a Long Range Y for a Performance, but looks like T Sportline wheels will work just fine (and save a huge amount of hassle)?

Yes, T Sportline, Tire rack, Discount Tire you can find 19", 20", Winter tire & wheel solutions. Inventory is tight these days. I have a 19" set of wheels and tires from Tire rack that are working wonderfully.

Whoever told you that was either misleading or clueless.

I'm in Tahoe area part time. Decided on a 2nd set of wheels to use for winter. I picked up 20" uberturbines from a M3P and run 265/40/20 winter tires (Michelin Alpin). A little bigger than the stock OEM 20 setup. Also square not staggered. So far I love the setup.

I'm buying winter wheels and tires for my 3YP. First time getting non oem wheels and first performance car. I'm looking on tire rack at PZero Winter 255/45R19 for my 3YP and see three wheel widths, 8, 8.5, and 9.5. not sure how to choose between these. Any advice?

Yes, they are wrong. I have 19" Enkei Vulcans here waiting for tires. I got them from Tire rack: they confirm they will fit the MYP. Go look at/measure the space from disc to inside of rim, there is plenty of room.

I went with 8 because it affects how the tire "bubbles" over the side for lack of a better word. Notice the stock MYP wheels actually stick out from the tires which is a recipe for wheel damage and looks bad IMHO. Then again I am also a Jeep guy who likes tires to be tall and bouncy on the wheel to create a cushion: super flat rides hard as heck. So, wider wheels = flatter sit road to tire= better handling but harsher ride. This is all in general as there are a 1000 factors involved (tire construction, materials, type of tire, etc.)
