Model Y Performance on drag strip + 0-60 + Model 3 comparison

I used to have a "stealth" Model 3 Performance with the factory 18" wheels and small brakes which is truly one of the greatest cars ever made in my opinion, and I tested it out at an official NHRA drag strip on an open test and tune night a couple times. That car has been sold unfortunately, but my wife recently picked up a Model Y Performance with the standard 21" wheels. I wanted to order it with the 19" Gemini wheels, but you can only order it with the PUP / performance upgrade package as most of you likely know. I just bought a new set of 19" Gemini wheels to swap on to save some weight, rolling resistance, and increase the sidewall height - the stealthy factor is a bonus too.

In order to see if there was any appreciable performance difference, I took the stock Model Y to the same drag strip last night and did 4 runs all at street tire pressure with zero prep. It was of course extremely consistent with the slowest time being 11.97 (first run at 97% SOC) and the fastest at 11.903 (89% SOC) with trap speeds varying between 114.85 to 115.03 mph. 0-60 times were very consisent at 3.49 seconds with 1' rollout and 3.71 seconds without. My Model 3 Performance was doing 0-60 at 3.14 with 1' rollout and 3.36 without, so I would say these times were to be expected with the extra weight and taller shape. The ~0.3-0.4 second differential held true through the quarter mile where the Model 3 did 11.66 at 114.7mph vs 11.90 and 115.03mph for the Y.

So it sounds like the Gemini wheels didn't improve you 0 to 60 times (over the stock 21" Uberturbines) at all.

This run was on the stock 21" setup. I wanted to get a baseline before adding the Geminis which I believe will actually lower the lower the 0-60 and quarter mile by a tenth or so. The Geminis are in the garage waiting for the Michelin Pilot Sports, and then I will go back and redo the tests.

Looking forward to seeing your results with 19" Genimis!

Geminis are on, and they did not disappoint! I'm pulling together a video to post because it was an epic race at Bandimere....they lined me next to a real drag car running in the 7s!! 🤣

Apologies on the slow replies - I've been traveling a lot for work lately. Also the video was filmed in 4k 120fps which has made the edit challenging since my ipad doesn't seem to support the files, so when I get back home I'll do it on my home computer. I grabbed a couple screenshots from the viewer however - it was quite a race!

Here is the data on the acceleration before and after the wheel and tire swap. I was hoping for at least a tenth improvement while making the swap, and I'm happy to report that was exactly the result:

I left the drag strip and headed up some of my fav twisty mountain roads to watch fall colors fly past, and I was very impressed with the new tires. They have a taller sidewall and are noticeably less aggressive on lateral and braking traction 7+ tenths' pace, but that's to be expected when compared with the stock 21s. The Y steers better, accelerates quicker, is more comfortable and quieter, less prone to flats and wheel damage, offers more tire sizes including winter options, and in my opinion, still looks great on the 19" Geminis with the bright red calipers standing out a lot more. At first my wife was reluctant to let me take off the Uberturbines, but she agrees the car is better in nearly every way now. The Uberturbines will most likely get sold once the weather is warmer again.

MTSN, I have one more query for you, "see if there is any difference in performance if you tell the car in settings that you changed between Uber. and Gemini.

I recently had 18" tires/wheels installed from TSportLine
1/4 Mile
With 21" factory tires/wheels, 12.09 @114.x. (The DRAGY Performance Report didn't save to my History tab (data from memory)
With 18" TSpotLine tires/wheels 1/4 mile at 81% SOC
5Ei6neU.png

With 21" factory tires/wheels at 91% SOC
98ePi5X.png

With 18" TSportLIne tires/wheels @ 89% SOC
zmFE8Lr.png

Both wheels had the same Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires, the 18s were 245/50 on all four wheels.

I wish we had a STICKY where folks could post their time slips as other sites have.
