Model Y Quality / Noises

I've had my Model Y for 2 weeks. Within a few days of delivery, I started hearing various noises. There is wind noise on the passenger side, like others have mentioned. We also have other noise -- sometimes a rubbing/squeaking that might be coming from the wheels. There is also a banging noise that sounds like it is in the rearend. Sometimes it even sounds like something is rolling around inside the body of the car. I have tried all types of driving trying to figure out a pattern -- nothing is consistent. Sometimes when coasting, sometimes at low speeds, sometimes on the freeway.

Has anyone else had these types of problems? It is actually embarassing to drive this car -- sounds like a junker rather than a luxury car! After an hour of being transferred around, I finally talked to someone in service, that just dismissed me. I do have an appointment, but 10 days out.

No weird sounds like that. Just the normal winding motor sound when you park in the garage. Check and make sure that the inside tire well insulation hasn’t come apart and is rubbing on your tire.

Had mine since May 30th, so more then a month and with 1944 miles today. logged a 650 mile trip to Las Vegas and back, nice a quiet ride.

Spoiler alert: you bought a Tesla. Not a luxury car.

So if this is your first EV you’ll definitely hear more wind noise and road noise in general because there is no normal engine/exhaust noise to give you that background noise.

These tires will transfer a good amount of road type noise into the cabin, to help that there is foam in the tires but there’s only so much to do. Do a visual inspection of the wheel wells for items that might be left over from transportation that the delivery people didn’t take out.

You could also try dropping the rear seats and removing the two trunk covers to try to hear the noise better back there. Hopefully your appointment finds the rest of the stuff but don’t be afraid to give them crap until they find something

To all the people downvoting...if you think the build quality and fit and finish of a Tesla rivals any German automaker, I would like some of what you are having.

Who said anything about a German automaker? I didn't downvote....but this person is hearing bizarre noises like rubbing/squeaking and something loose and/or moving around while the vast majority of recent owners have reported their MYs to be decently quiet. This is unrelated to standard build quality and I would say worth investigating.

I downvoted you because the comment was useless and could reasonably turn off a new Tesla owner and a new person to the forum. I’d think you’d realize this since you have over 1700 posts but maybe you need to be reminded of the community this forum is trying to foster. Have a great weekend

And you’re exactly the problem.

New potential owners should know what they are getting into. Sounds like OP thought he was buying a luxury vehicle and Tesla’s are most certainly NOT in that class. Not even the S or X would qualify.

I’m not here to foster a community that gives Tesla a pass for pawning off $60K pieces of junk to paying customers. Sadly, the echo chamber appears to be in full force.

All cars have problems. However, we shouldn't try to brush them aside, or hide them from potential new owners. Doing that will harm Tesla in the long run. I've seen way too many people on this forum easily forgive Tesla for the inexcusable issues that their vehicles are afflicted with.

I wouldn’t really consider them pieces of junk. Do you really think that? Is my model 3 perfect? No. But it’s still the most comfortable car I’ve owned, it’s nice enough inside and out and the driving experience and “fuel” savings are totally worth it.

Wowza. I think you're over thinking this... maybe instead of holding Tesla to the fire here on the forums you could Tweet Elon. The OP asked a question and got a couple responses then a snarky remark, I'm just trying to help the OP as we all should be. Yes the Model Y (and other models) have some issues in production, I would know because our Model Y went to the body shop for 5 days and I've still got a mobile tech coming out next week for the charger door issue/rear seats/broken clips in the frunk. WE GET IT, production QC is not a priority for Tesla at the moment or within the last couple years but they still sell like hotcakes, either way relax bud.

And you can read the above paragraph as well. Post #4 from me explained what the OP should expect as a new EV owner and how to get in touch with Tesla to fix the issues and not let up.

I really don't understand why there are 3 members in this one thread who are giving the OP crap about a car they just bought and how they should've known better when a Tesla rep doesn't even get in the car with them at the point of delivery. Ya'll need to chill and just post up some decent HELPFUL responses.

There's probably something loose and hitting things.
The Tesla service technician professionals will figure this out and duct tape it, so you will have a great Tesla experience.

Geodeemoore, as you already know, something is wrong with your car. Don’t let the SC get away with poo pooing it off. Mine is quiet with no wind noise, no rattles, or other odd noises. Drives solid and sure.

What level of Motor Whine noises do you hear? Mine is very loud while cruising around 45mph with high pitched whining noise and pulsing / beeping? Sounds like you aren't hearing this?

It’s not FUD when Tesla has taken 10 steps back in their ability to simply assemble a vehicle.
Having owned 3, initial quality seems consistent among them. I agree with your points that owners should know what they’re getting into, and be aware that the fit and finish is among the worst of even non-luxury vehicles I’ve owned. However, those of us that still purchase them aren’t necessarily blind consumers. I was fully aware of what to expect but still calculated that, for me, the MY was the best option.

You really are a member of the cult of Elon.

Tweet the CEO about build quality issues that he is no doubt aware of? That’s your idea?

And to be clear; I’m not bashing OP. I’m bashing Tesla’s build quality and CS. Both of which are completely indefensible.

Oh I’m sorry, if you have his personal number we can both call him, I didn’t realize you had his number already!

I’m not sure what you want... you’re complaining about build quality on a Tesla focused forum, to a bunch of other people who have bought Tesla’s and are here discussing a build quality issue and how to resolve it. I don’t see how we’re drinking the kool aid or part of a cult, you’re on the same forum as the rest of us friend.

Have a great weekend fellow Tesla owner!

Nice! What was your charging routine for the Vegas trip? Was it hard getting a charging spot in the casino parking garages?
