While there are some exceptions such as shipping cars to customers in states where Tesla can’t direct sale and touch-less deliveries with COVID-19 lockdowns, in most cases you don’t have to pay before seeing the car.

There is a 7-day no questions asked return policy.

Most all the issues I have seen online are cosmetic and typically involve fixing panel alignments or paint chips. Things that are usually fixed quickly and easily. Things that most other car makers and dealers address before delivering to customers.

Many early VINs are just fine. It seems that more of the problematic builds are the ones that happened in the last couple weeks as they were trying to maximize production with both end of quarter and possible factory shut-down looming over them.

If you’re ready to take delivery and the car is your ideal configuration, I say go for it. Tesla has it’s flaws with quality control at times, but they also do a fantastic job of getting these cars fixed up. If you can take delivery with your delivery specialist on-hand, you’ll be able to go over the car and make a list of any issues you see and schedule a service if needed. A good delivery specialist and service center would take a car that comes in needing attention and fix it up before presenting to the customer. Once again, I think a lot of cars were slipping through without that level of attention on the delivery end because end of quarter and looming shut-downs.

I think if you want the car then move forward with it.

During my 2 delivery experiences, my own and with a family member, we did not have to pay before inspecting the vehicle. Can always look at it and back out, although once it's "your" car sitting there in front of you, you probably won't want to

For what it's worth, when I swapped into mine I took Vin 003XX and had a similar concern but I've totally moved on and love my car. I tend to think for the low VINs it's a bit of trade off in that yes they probably had more early production issues but they were probably moving slower and fixing more stuff as wthey went, but so far so good for me (a couple minor issues that i need to get fixed at first service once I get my homelink but nothing outside of the ordinary for what others have reported, i.e. adjustment to one of the rear seatback mechanisms, etc.). I'm thrilled to have the car. Of course you can always wait and I'm sure these issues will be ironed out, but I wouldn't be scared.

I did see Tesla is supposedly doing a running change on the "Noisy" Heat pump, so as an early adopter of a new car your going to experience any first gen issues, but from what I have read almost all the current issues are related to Tesla's poor quality control, and should be easily fixed with Paint, and alignment. Then again if you want a car now, Id take it now as who knows how long before they start making cars in large volumes.

Update 2: Delivery Specialist called me to sign Loan docs. VIN Changed again to 06xx.

Went from 01xx to 08xx to now 06xx (Delivery specialist confirmed this vin). Should have the vehicle in about 40min.

Mine is supposed to be here within 12 minutes... not holding my breath, but it's great to hear that the low VINs are just fine. Mine is a 0024XX VIN, and I'm a little nervous about that range based on some other Y's with issues that I've seen posted here. Finger crossed!

UPDATE: Car got delivered. Everything appears perfect. 3 very minor issues:

1) Hatch truck corner (where it meets the glass roof) needs touchup paint on the lip (about 0.5cm).
2) Left Taillight by charge port is slightly mis-aligned as compared to right tail right.
3) Driver side handle has a small chip.

Other than these 3, no issues. All panel gaps look great, fit and finishing look great. VIN ends in 06xx

Wow, that was epic. Did you use the App to track your car as it was being driven to you?

I tried to log in when Delivery Specialist left Fremont factory, but it said no car associated with the account. Car appeared on my Tesla app about 10min after Delivery Specialist left.

I was undecided between the Porsche Cayenne and Model Y last month. My Alfa Romeo Stelvio lease is over in couple of weeks. So Far, liking the Tesla way more than my Stelvio and even the Cayenne.

Loving the Simple Modern interior (no need for knobs). I had a Model S 2 years now and wife likes the "Y" more than the "S".

Home Link ordered, screen protector ordered, now ordering some center console organizers. Time to go and activate sentry mode.
