For the second time in a month, rodents (probably mice) have chewed through my rear ultrasonic sensor harness. This time we're wrapping the harness and connectors with some of Honda's Rodent Tape (Honda Part No: 4019-2317). I'm also spraying peppermint oil, moth balls, rodent deterrent spray, Decon blocks and raising the suspension to the highest setting when parked. At over $850 each incident, this is getting rediculous.

Do you get an error message if wires are cut to the sensors?

Yes, on the dash it says, "Park Assist Unavailable" and when in autopilot lane changes are not possible, indicated by the message, "Auto Lane Change unavailable". Every time the turn signal is engaged, whether in AP or not, a message pops up saying, "Ultrasonic sensors not communicating."

Is that $850 just to replace the harness that is attached to the bumper cover, or is there more than that harness damaged?

The first round was $850 for a new rear harness and repairing of an AC harness, which was also rodent-chewed, plus labor charges. This time it appears to be only the rear harness ($75 plus $155 for diagnosis and $149 for labor). And then there's a rental car for 5 days, for an additional $150 or so, plus gas.

The biggest issue is the nuisance or dealing with working with the service center as I live over 3 hours away, so it a minimum of an entire day to get anything at all worked on. Add to that the fact that there doesn't seem to be any clear cut way of ensuring rodents don't just start chewing again. The mice seem to be attacking when we visit relatives over in Beaumont, CA.

That's awful! Sorry to hear about this crap!

Have you considered rat poison in your garage? There are safe alternatives from Lowes so that your pets are not impacted, just rodents.

The vermin aren't an issue at my home, only when we visit relatives where we have to park on the street in a very nice, new, neighborhood. I've started putting out d-CON blocks when we visit there. If neighborhood cats or small dogs crawl underneath the car and eat them from inside the protective anti-pet housing, so be it.

Protect your wires from damage caused by rodents. Muskrats, mice, and other rodents can easily find and destroy wiring and hose systems. Rodents' teeth never stop growing, so to control the length, they gnaw on anything in sight, including wire, cables, and hoses. Rodent Resistant Expandable Sleeving was designed to be repulsive to rodents, so they will leave your valuable systems alone, saving you from costly damage. Please Use Caution while handling Flexo Rodent Resistant. A layer of capsaicin (active component in chili peppers) on this product may cause skin and/or eye irritation.

  • Economical and easy to install.
  • Cut and abrasion resistant.
  • Expands up to 150%.
  • The ID size is measured at a relaxed state.
  • Use the expandable tubing hot knife (item no. 990070) to cut sleeving.
  • RoHS Compliant.

A rodent caused 30K in damages before it got
Totaled last month. I finally put a camera in my car to confirm that was it. The Tesla service repair couldn’t believe what it had done to the car once they opened it all up. It chewed every wire up

I'd be looking to install some electrified traps inside the car, under the frunk, in the bumpers, somewhere so that when the critter is zapped it falls out so it doesn't stink up the car. Maybe find holes under the car where they would try to sneak in, wire up the hole to electrocute the rodent on the way in - even if it doesn't kill it, it will make it go away. Yea I know, every engineer has an itch to build a better mouse trap ;)
