Has the whine returned to any of the cars that 5.8.8 seemed to fix?

Warmer weather. Ambient temperatures effect whether or not this sound will occur. I seriously doubt this is fixed. You can't magically make the electrical contactors tighter through software.

They are going to vibrate at the frequency of the signal you are passing though them. So while you can't make them tighter with firmware you could change the frequency they vibrate at, not saying that is what happened but it is possible.
