Moving off-topic posts to an existing off-topic thread, and then closing that thread?

Okay, so I can understand the need to send off-topic posts to an (appropriate?) off-topic thread.

I can't fault the moderators for doing that, and in fact I am greatly in favor of their actions in that arena (even when it involves various posts I've made, since I have a tendency to wander far off into the weeds...)

However, what is the point of moving several off-topic posts to an existing off-topic thread, and then closing that thread?

That doesn't exactly provide a place to continue (and in about 20 years, finish) that particular off-topic conversation!

Any grumpiness in this post may be due to the fact that I brought my laptop up to the attic as a distraction while working on some solar PV installation prep... not exactly the coolest place to be at the end of the summer in North Carolina!

Only "snippy" postings are being moved into purgatory. If they're simply off-topic, then they're moved to "random chitchat".
