Mud flaps & Model Y

Hi all,

So I received the “Amazon Premium” versions yesterday so now have all 3 sets that are currently on the market. I hope the information that follows will help you make the right choice for your desires and vehicle.

All measurements and images shown on a 2021 Model Y Performance that is all stock.

Overall thoughts

Tesla OEM: Highest build quality. Lower ⅔ of the flap is a sturdy yet flexible material. Side that faces the wheel is flat. Width covers the entire contact area and profile of the tire to provide maximum protection. Looks a bit like a rally-style flap when on. Front only. Fit is OEM quality.

Amazon “Premium” molded: Soft-touch plastic material. Good build quality. As seen from the pics and photos, these are shorter and wider than the Amazon “Regular” flaps. For the fronts, the width covers the entire contact area and profile of the tire to provide maximum protection. Side that faces the tire is flat. Scratch fairly easily, however shouldn’t affect outward appearance - only on the side that face the wheel. Rears are comparable to the Regular in terms of coverage. Overall fit is slightly worse than Regular but not bad - just small details. Example: the hole for the OEM bolt you use for the fronts isn’t far enough out to account for the diameter of the washer on the bolt (you can still screw it in, just make sure it’s tight). The rear requires drilling into the plastic fender trim for one screw, however you can use double sided tape or just disregard it.

Amazon “Regular” molded (these are also what RPM is selling, and what you find on eBay): More basic plastic construction. For the fronts, these are the narrowest and just barely cover the contact area on stock Pirelli’s but don’t cover the entire tire width. If you have a Michelin PS4AS, Vredestein AS, or another tire with a wider contact patch, these probably wouldn’t cover that entire contact area. However, they extend about an inch farther down than the Premium set, so what you give up in width you gain in length. The side that faces the tire has a repository to collect dirt, debris, snow, etc. This may be good or bad. Fit is good and follows the contours of the car a bit better than Premium. For the rears, fit and width of coverage is comparable to the Premium versions. OEM bolt hole has the same challenge as the Premium fronts. Hang down 3/4" more than the Premiums. No drilling required.

Conclusion

IMO, there is still no perfect mud flap for the Model Y. If someone combined the Amazon Premium width with the Regular length, that would be a winner in my book. OEM delivers the most protection by far if you like the design. But that said, it’s good to have these options out now.

Hope this helps.

I finally washed the car yesterday after all the snow and salt on the road in NJ.. The lower bottom back door area had a little paint chips from debris and the black plastic rocker trims are pitted as well. This is from driving from the end of december until now since the car sat for 2 months before that. I got the Tesla mud flaps installed when they first came out and about to install the PPF there so hopefully those two will minimize the damage...

Anyone know if the Y and 3 mud flaps fit the same? tesla gave me an extra set of the ones for the 3 (2018) and our Y is coming in 2 weeks :)
They are different. I would sell the Model 3 mud flaps and purchase mud flaps specifically made for the Model Y. There are more choices now than even a month ago: Tesla (front only), Amazon, eBay, Tesmanian, RPMTesla, EVMudflaps.

Hello wacko from rdf ....and what are the best fit mud guards in terms of fitting. I don't like rally car look of oem
I installed the OEM front mud flaps on my Model Y. I am satisfied that these prevent 80 to 90% of the spray from the front tires on the doors of my Model Y. I may purchase, install the Tesla PPF on the rear doors when it gets a bit warmer. For images and descriptions of some of the available mud flaps see this thread. If you don't want to read the whole thread then work backwards from the end:

I got the ppf for the 4 doors ...ebay 320 cad . Plus will do mudflaps .let's see

Installed some mudflaps I got off Amazon.

For those that installed a rear mudflaps. the screw that you loosen up on the bottom, is it held in place with a welded on nut?

I would think it's welded on. When loosening the screw, it is turning freely and it feels like the nut is not welded on. I didn't unscrew it all the way. If I had to, I would need to pull while loosening it.

It’s just a bolt and washer. 10mm, nothing fancy. The thread is kind of fine, which is sort of unusual but that’s all.
I unscrewed it with my impact driver, put the flap on, screwed it on again with the driver, and called it a day. 5 minutes per side.

seems straight forward enough, but the screw is half way out and you can angle it by like 15% in all directions.

I installed the molded ones that are Amazon and ebay now. Very nice and easy to install.

HOWEVER, when trying to remove the hex bolt on the left rear, it appeared stripped. I tried to get a wrench in above the molded fender piece and it just wouldn't loosen up. I finally had to cut it off with a hack saw and replace it. Not sure why it came loose and wouldn't fully release from the nut. But I did discover that the nut is something odd that I've never seen before. Rounded. No wonder my wrench couldn't grasp it!

What the hell is this thing and why did it release from whatever was holding it in place?

I think that is what is happening to me right now, what I was describing before your post.

How did you get inside the bumper get the nut out ?
