Musk Says Bond’s Rocket-Firing Lotus Submarine Inspired the Cybertruck

Ahead of the Tesla Cybertruck reveal, Chief Executive Elon Musk tweeted that the truck design was partly inspired by the James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me.

The tweet shared a clip from the 1977 film that shows the Bond character driving a Lotus Esprit that turns into a rocket-firing submarine after it plunges into the water.

Who knows what that has to do with the Cybertruck. Maybe the truck’s front end draws from the Lotus design. Maybe the truck will be a transformer.

Musk actually purchased the Lotus used in the movie for a reported $1 million, with plans to restore it to a working submarine powered by Tesla components.

“It was amazing as a little kid in South Africa to watch James Bond in The Spy Who Loved Me drive his Lotus Esprit off a pier, press a button, and have it transform into a submarine underwater,” Musk said in October 2013. “I was disappointed to learn that it can’t actually transform. What I’m going to do is upgrade it with a Tesla electric powertrain and try to make it transform for real.”
