Blog Musk Says Giga Berlin Paint Shop to Be ‘World’s Most Advanced’

Tesla’s factory in Germany will feature an upgraded paint shop that Chief Executive Elon Musk said will be “world’s most advanced.”

Commenting on Twitter, Musk said that cars coming out of the factory will receive a high quality paint job with “more layers of stunning colors that subtly change with curvature.”

Customers receiving cars made in China or the U.S. will have to wait for the new paint until Tesla’s existing factories can be upgraded.

“It’s hard to retrofit these improvements to an operating paint shop,” Musk said on Twitter.

Tesla has traditionally been conservative about paint color offerings, as it tries to reduce complexities during ordering and manufacturing. For instance, the Model 3 comes standard in Pearl White Multi-Coat and any other color is an additional $1,000.

Musk has hinted that the company anticipates rolling Model Ys off the line in Berlin in about a year, so it will be some time before we see those layers of stunning colors in the sunlight.

Well I don't know about World's Best, but they are probably World's Least right now, so you can only go up. My paint was not good. Meh. It's aluminum it won't rust. I thought people were exaggerating. Nope. Stevie Wonder would complain about it.
Perhaps have Magna Steyr make them? Those guys do a great job on paint.

As is often the case, Elon Musk is full of *crap*. In 2013 Musk said every Model S will have a "piano finish" and that it will be the best built car in the world. As we found out here in reality, the Model S received probably the worst paint job in the history of automotive manufacturing and was Consumer Reports least reliable, most trouble-prone vehicle with the lowest initial quality ratings.

Don't believe anything Musk says. When he makes hyperbolic statements like this, he is almost always covering for some major insecurity. Look deeper.

And let's just give him the benefit of the doubt... why the hell should European cars get better paint jobs than US cars? By association, he is saying that all cars made in Fremont and China have inferior paint jobs. Why the hell would I buy one knowing that?

This seems like a bad idea. Just put a normal paint job on the cars. This is just making it more expensive and difficult to do body work after accidents. It will probably impact insurance rates too.
On the Third Row podcast, Elon estimated it would at $50 to the cost of the car and $500 to the value/ price. 10x ROI is pretty darn good. As to repair, sure three coats is one more than 2 coats (base and clear), but that is minimal impact compared to the overall repair cost. Things like bumper covers come pre-painted anyway,

With that attitude, you might as well never buy a Tesla since they will continually get better.

As to why, the European paint line is being built with the extra section needed to do a three coat paint job. You can't just shoehorn a full paint booth and oven into an existing paint line (Fremont).
It will likely be an add on option, not included with every car.

Musk has looser lips than the hooker down the street. He should keep his mouth shut, especially when that factory is over a year from actually producing cars. Announce it in a year, after you've upgraded the other factories and just before cars are ready to ship. He doesn't understand basic communication.

The other factories most likely are not going to get upgraded. Why is it bad for him to mention improvements they have in the design?
