If you consider the statements that Tesla’s chief executive makes on Twitter as official corporate communications, then mark your calendar for the debut of the company’s crossover SUV for March 15, 2019.
Here’s how Elon Musk handled the announcement on Twitter.
Tesla YouTuber Ben Sullins asked for a date for the Model Y unveiling. Musk replied “March 15,” but did not specify a year.
Then, Tesla podcaster Ryan McCaffrey asked if he was serious about the date. Musk replied that he “just made that up, because the Ides of March sounded good.”
Musk then followed his tweet with another saying to “consider it real.”
So, it seems we’re 10 months away from seeing the Model Y. By that point, Tesla should have Model 3 production humming, including the $35,000 standard range version that aims to be the electric car for the masses. Tesla hopes to leverage learnings from the Model 3 program to make the Model Y’s rollout easier.
Musk said on the company’s Q1 earnings call that investment in the Model Y program will only become significant in 2019 and the car won’t hit roads until at least 2020. He said the production location has not been decided, but to expect an announcement by end of year.
Musk also made a bold claim on the call regarding the all-electric crossover: “I think Model Y is going to be a manufacturing revolution,” he said without offering more specifics.
