Musk Suggests the Tesla Pickup Could Be a Mini Tesla Semi

Tesla has publicly acknowledged that it has an electric pickup in the early stages of development, but a tweet from Elon Musk suggests the vehicle could share architecture with the upcoming Tesla Semi.

When asked by a Twitter user about the possibility of a light duty pickup, Musk said “What if we just made a mini version of the Tesla Semi?”

The Tesla Semi is scheduled to debut on October 26. When announcing the event on Twitter, Musk called the truck a “beast” and “unreal.”

As far as Tesla’s timeline for new vehicles, the automaker plans to release the Model Y crossover next. That vehicle will be based on the same platform as the Model 3. Musk has previously said pickup details could come as soon as 2018.

Musk has already made statements that add to the intrigue of the semi launch. At the shareholders meeting in June, Musk teased a potential surprise. “I really recommend showing up for the semi truck unveiling – maybe there’s a little more than what we are saying here,” Musk said at the time.

Of course, given Musk’s tweet regarding a pickup, you have to wonder if the upcoming semi event will also provide details and designs for a smaller truck.
