SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk said this week that he is “highly confident” the company will operate a crewed mission to Mars by 2026.

It’s hard to imagine humans on Mars in just six years.

“If we get lucky, maybe four years,” Musk said Tuesday during an awards show in Germany. “We want to send an uncrewed vehicle there in two years.”

SpaceX is currently developing its Starship rocket at its facility in Boca Chica, Texas. The stainless steel space vehicle could eventually transport up to 100 people at a time into space.

SpaceX recently conducted its first commercial crew mission, an important confidence builder for the company’s plans to transport humans in a way not unlike commercial air travel.

The next test for Starship will be a test flight of about 15,240 meters altitude, a significant jump up from a September test flight of about 150 meters.
