Mustang Mach-E Gets Great Reviews = Model 3 Challenger

You're dreaming if you think you don't need to wait for the Mach-E specialist to get your car serviced. Hopefully, Ford mandates that dealerships train more than just 1 tech on the Mach-E. That 20k production tells me not that many techs are going to study up on it.

Your examples ain't quite working. Tesla actually did a very good job of servicing things at Model S production ramp up. In that 20K production world of yours.

The problem was that Elon was bleeding bucks, and the first thing he threw overboard was the sales and service organization.

Uh-oh spaghetti-o.

I just read a very positive road test review of the Mach-E in Car and Driver.

Looks like the new kid in town may require Elon and company to focus on that strange concept known as build quality.

Well optioned Mach-E's will easily beat Tesla in the price game too, particularly with the $7500 advantage for a while.

Oh ya? What does F.o.r.d. stand for? Fix or repair daily. My Tesla's build quality is superb. A ford is nothing to gawk over, especially the interior lol

I wouldn't consider a Meh-E. I don't want a ford nor a crossover. Not an exciting vehicle either.

Not everyone will get the full $7,500 so not true. And it's coming back for Tesla. Model 3 is cheaper and better

Y is a better comparison being a crossover but the Y is also better than the Meh-E

Ford who?

Oh, it’s going to be a bit worse than whatever Tesla does. Having owned Ford Special vehicles I can tell you there is a lot of confusion when the car is recently out. On top of that a nice Focus rental is all they’ll give you. I don’t miss it.

I’m still interested in the Mach E though. I haven’t seen one in person so I’m wondering if it’s Model Y size or more of a sporty hatchback size.

Sporty hatchback size. The Y has much more space. I've been in both. The ford just didn't do anything for me. Felt like a traditional gas car but it's electric. When I'm in my Tesla I feel like I'm driving the future

That fix or repair daily cliche is like 50 years old.

Please come up with a new one. I had a Fiat way past - and people got tired of the "Fix It Again Tony" thing about 1990.

Top discussions at MachEForum as of now...

upload_2021-2-13_11-41-12.png

Quickly browsing that forum I find it is already at least a third Powertrain Malfunction report. And there is another thread there discussing panel misalignment to the point of door damaging paint. Yes this is Ford, not Tesla. Why, why couldn't they make a solid EV without bugs and quality issues for that much money!? I now really want to see at least one (just one) solid EV on the market for reasonable price (so, not Taycan), on a uniquely EV platform, broadly available, with minimum quality issues, and from a manufacturer that is truly invested in making EVs successful and profitable.

Wow, I just visited the Mach E forum as well. Crazy how many issues are coming up now that some deliveries are happening. In 10 minutes of reading: dealers not honoring msrp, cars shutdown with no propulsion (at an intersection!), panel gaps that bind on door open, really low range, charging broke, and broken android auto (fix is to side load some sketchy download). All that and then no OTA to fix the software glitches, one guy already had to visit the dealer for a recall.

Funny how no EV sites have even picked up any of this  Tesla would be front page news with that disastrous of a rollout.

I mean, it's not surprising to me. WIth my Focus RS it was the same fiasco and that's an ICE

Yeah, the more I read over on the Mach E forum, the more issues you see. They only started deliveries, does not seem like it's ready for prime time. I recall the Ford brass tweeting last month about how smooth the launch would be, no compromises. Guess talk is easy, execution is hard :)

Seems like even the "good" cars have this issue.

"The driver display is buzzing just like those old monitors from the 90s and early 2000s would. It is loud and it is an abrasive tone. You hear it with the HVAC on, you hear it with the radio on, you still hear it at an annoying volume with the windows cracked when you aren’t driving too fast"

This is exactly what I wonder about. While all news sites proceed to hail Ford for the best EV in the world the real owners are trying to live through glitches, problems, and real disasters like the car basically shutting down on you in the intersection. There always be problematic units, but considering a very small number of Mach-E on the roads (probably about 1000 by this time) these troubles seem more and more as widespread quality or (at worst) design issues.

Some at the Ford forum suggest that as the "powertrain malfunction" disappears after some time it is not a real issue and that Ford will soon fix this with an OTA, and for now you just need to try to reboot the computer and reset the error codes. Oh, boy. I hated to reset codes on my 15-year old Camry without fixing issues, I can't imaging doing this on a brand new car as an acceptable way forward.

Whoa, hold on. Growing Pains!!!
I’m not a Ford guy, but too much expectations here for their 1st EV release. It's to be expected with any new release. Even Elon acknowledged in his interview with Munro that he was appalled by the seats in early Model S. Give Ford time, they have about 100 years of experience and institutional knowledge, but this is not their main focus in the moment. I welcome more competition, it good for the EV market, despite its looks.

I’m not in the C-suite, but who has the balls to tell Bill Ford they are going to divert funds from the profitable F150 programs to the Mach E? In case you haven't noticed the big gas guzzling PU’s are sold at a premium. Best selling vehicle in America for about 20 years or so. And they are barely keeping up with demand.

I’m thrilled they stuck their toe in to test the waters. And that’s all this was, nothing more and nothing less. If it sells well, Jim might have that convo with Bill. Until then welcome the competition, it good for the EV market, and good for Tesla owners.

I agree. My issue with Ford (other than holding the name and owned by the family of an infamous anti-Semite) is that they spent SO much on Mach-E PR, all those articles, awards, etc., Ford reps publicly claiming they will absolutely have no problems like Tesla did at the beginning of the Mach-E roll out. I think the Mach-E is a potentially interesting car and a good try by Ford. But why do they (Ford guys) reject the reality that this is a small production volume experiment to probe consumer response for EVs by Ford. The availability will be a problem (if the vehicle is really good), there are issues with design such as displaying the projected range only, too busy UI menus, very thin tires for a heavy SUV, expected issues with connectivity and with electrical components reliability in the first year. When I stated these concerns on the MachEForum I was banned as a troll. Now I see them living through experiences they dismissed earlier as trolling.....

sigh...

Funny. I read over there on occasion, and before the MME came out every other post was about how Tesla had issues, links to anti-Tesla articles, and "roof blow off" comments non-stop. The few folks that tried to explain a new EV would have glitches was met with angry posts about Tesla fanboys and trolls, and go watch the glowing YouTube reviews of the MME. You are right, guess they banned many of those folks (don't see them anymore) and they are now sugar coating all these MME issues that a few months ago they bashed Tesla for.

That forum really ate up the Ford CEO post of: “The doors fit properly, the plastics and other materials color-match, the bumpers don’t fall off, the roof doesn’t come off when you wash it, the door handles don’t get stuck in cold weather. …” Now the MME has a few in the wild and already they have a wiki of nearly a dozen issues, some major like lose of power in an intersection, locked out of car because phone does not work, a recall/update that OTA does not work for, etc.

There were many posts about how they would never accept a car with issues....now this is the latest post I saw on the MME forum.

"I’m confident Ford will fix the big issues that have been noted (eg, alerts after charging, propulsion interruption alerts, etc). I fear it will never fix a noisy screen, or a car with wind noise from the roof. Ever. These decisions to overlook are choices we shouldn’t have to make. Still, next week I fear I’ll be in the same position - accept a car with issues, or give up on a journey that’s taken forever."

Starting to feel sorry for the folks on the "macheforum", people are having bricked cars in the cold now, numerous reboots while driving, and many more Power train failures. Hope they get it straightened out before more cars are delivered.

true, the world of tesla pre model 3 was a very different world. service was far from perfect and while the early cars were problematic the service was capable of keeping up and in a timely manner. with hundreds of thousands of new model 3's on the road the entire system was overwhelmed and coupled with cutbacks on the customer service side life with a tesla that had issues became challenging. I've owned various teslas since 2013 and just sold my model 3. I am moving to a porsche taycan and expect the after sales experience to be better with the porsche. while the porsche tech is not up to tesla's level and the range is nowhere near the levels of the newer model S the interior and ride of the porsche is better.

Meanwhile, I am a Ford guy - and have been a pretty happy one over the years. And I am pretty confident that Ford will eventually iron out the kinks and make good EVs, at high volumes and decent prices. That said, I see every indication that Ford is not there yet, and probably won't be for a few years. Even putting aside everything else, and just looking at planned production, the Mach-E is not going to be a big factor in the EV adoption in the immediate future. From that perspective, I see the constant stream of 'glowing reviews' about the Mach-E as having a bit of a whiff of desperation to them. Established auto makers are really, really anxious for there to be buzz around an EV that is not a Tesla, and are working like anything to create that buzz, whether or not their EV offerings are quite ready yet.

I'm sure dealers were required to install charging stations and special equipment to service.

If they were smart, they would have installed a few in the "front lot" and made them accessible to customers 24/7. A lot of Ford dealerships out there. At least they would have their own version of supercharger network, something that is required to have a "useable" EV.

I saw my first Mustang a few days ago and got to speak to the owner. He told me he also owns a model 3 and so far he’s very underwhelmed with the Mustang. His complaints so far are mainly in the tech. He said the touch screen is very unresponsive and almost unusable. He had only had it a week and mentioned he more than likely wouldn’t keep it long. It looked kinda cool (I couldn’t see door handles)
