Since May, I’ve been researching on the MS/MX as a replacement for our Enclave SUV that just got sold. I need to purchase by August for a long-distance trip. I have read many pros and cons of the MX/MS from forum members. Before I go out and purchase the Volvo XC90, I want to ask MX owners for their opinions one more time to see if I should reconsider the MX/MS. This is why I’m still on this forum.
We love EV cars, we have the Volt since 2013 and recently purchased the E-Golf for daily commute. We need a long-distance replacement car for our family. We have 2 college kids and occasionally, they still take long trips with us. 3rd bench is nice to have and not required in case we have more than 5 people.
Why XC90 – We want a luxury long distance midsize SUV. Looked at the several SUV like the GLE, X5, RX450HL and decided on the XC90. We like the luxury interior and no range limit. The XC90 is around 80K. If you know a better ICE SUV, I want to hear it too.
Why not the MX – For 90K, we want a more luxurious interior and the MX just can’t compare with the ICE car in that price range. Also, I read too many threads that the MX still has too many small issues and Tesla service is slow. Since I’m buying and not lease, I’m worry about long term.
We have some MX die-hard fans and some with buyer’s remorse and would like to hear all your opinions before my purchase. Thanks.
Some one posted on these forums that dissatisfied people are more likely to post if they have a complaint than those that are entirely satisfied. We traded a Jag XJ8 for an S. Both good looking cars but did not miss the Jag dash board which was full of buttons etc while the S was has two, one for the glove box door and the other for emergency blinkers. Absolutely clean interior in the S. But after 18 months, we decided to take an X out for an afternoon. Wow, Nothing like it. 20k miles in under 2 years with trips to the SW and the coast. In fact we left for a trip the morning after we took delivery of the X. About 80 miles in, the systems were calibrated and AP became active. Car performed great.
From the interior looking out, there is no better vehicle to appreciate either city or countryside. The visibility is fantastic. Evan from the middle row. Your college kids will appreciate getting in and out via the FWDs and you have grandchildren, you will be glad of those wide high opening FWDs.
By the way, we were just notified by Tesla that the battery coolant need not be changed for the life of the battery and the battery has an 8 year warranty. Tesla monitors their fleet and adjusts on the fly, does Volvo or anyone else do that? Brakes life is much longer than an in an ICE because of regenerative braking. About all you have to pay attention to is tire wear and pressure and the windshield wipers. No radiator flushes, oil and oil filter changes, spark plugs, transmission checks.
As for safety, the Tesla is always looking out for you. It watches not only the car in front of you but the one in front of it. It now picks up bicyclers, motorcycles, jay walkers and people making left hand turns across your lane. And just for good measure, it can supply you with a movie clip of what happened. The dynamic headlights track your steering too. Over the years we have seen great improvements in lane keeping and collision avoidance response capabilities through OTA updates. The next OTA update due in the coming month has red light and stop sign recognition included. No other car improves its capabilities with time. Who would give up these present and coming capabilities for a car frozen in place upon delivery?
