Executive summary: put up more than 3.8 kW; it is easier ;-)

Colorado
~ 6000 HDD a year
? ~ 2000 CDD a year
Two person household
Marginal electricity on our local grid is coal, estimated to have 1 Kg CO2, 2 gram Nox and 2 gram Sox per kWh
NG Home boiler for DHW and radiant heat.
Annual PV production ~ 6700 kWh

I was limited by my landlord for a ground array and by my net meter arrangement with my utility had I chosen to put the array on the roof. The utility was kind enough to let me size to 120% of my estimated use with two EV cars

I generate ~ 1000 kWh a year PV electricity I do not use and send to the grid. That net generation offsets my much reduced NG consumption -- now that I have:
  • changed to local person rather than multi-room heating
  • and my wife has agreed to a lower flow shower head
  • and is willing to limit showers to 10 minutes a go.
  • and we are washing dishes more efficiently (specifically: I took over the duties.)
So that is our home and cars. Next step is to offset plane flights with additional clean generation to the grid. None of that 'green purchase' garbage. Changing out the fridge to a modern efficient device should cover ~ 1 flight a year.
