My insurance says the vin on my new Tesla is a 2020

I purchased my model 3 RWD new from Tesla. Picked it up on 9/24. When I insured it the VIN is pulling up a 2020 model. Any ideas?

Make sure your insurance company entered the correct VIN. I caught a mistake with my Tacoma a few years after I purchased it by random luck. Who knows what would have happened if I got into an accident.

I think you've really got to get to the bottom of this. Either there's a mistake by the insurance carrier, in which case you might not be covered in a accident if they discover they've been charging you the wrong rate because you didn't correct them. --OR-- Tesla has somehow sold you a 2020 car or somehow used a 2020 VIN and you'll be bitten when/if you try to sell and a buyer calls you on the discrepancy. You could even have DMV trouble if this gets flagged as a vehicle with a modified VIN or is construed as a fraud of some sort.

Worse case with the wrong VIN, you get a letter saying your insurance is canceled and you aren't covered, and you got a ticket for driving an unlicensed car. Had it happen on a BMW motorcycle. Had to go to traffic court with documentation to fix it.

Are you able to take the car to the insurance agent and have them physically look at the vin? Does the vin match the vin on the door sticker?

I ordered it and waited about 4 months for it to arrive. Had a few miles on it when I picked it up from the Carlsbad, CA location.

I did not by from inventory and the car was new. It’s definitely weird that’s for sure.

Yeah, I confirmed every single letter and number. So weird.

Haha we ended up dropping them for the Tesla the other day and adding the Tesla insurance. My anxiety couldn’t take it anymore. Ended up being $100 cheaper a month too compared apples to apples. We are pretty impressed!

Thank you! I ran it through here and it comes up as a 2022. Sounds like an issue on the insurance carriers end.

Geico! I do have my other vehicles with them still. We’ve been with them since 2006 no issues.

I had also Geico for a very long time with no issues but they kept on increasing rates very aggressively and I had to switch at some point. Still surprised that they did a mistake like this with the VIN
