Evening all,

New to the community on here but not new to Tesla. I’ve recently taken delivery of my MY long range here in the uk, performance are not currently available as yet forcing the purchase of the LR.

I’ve upgraded to the acceleration boost but still I need more. To get the little extra kick im exploring the options of replacing the 990 motor to a 980. I’ve possibly got a 980 motor coming from a M3P after a front end hit, possibly writing off the car. He’s looking at buying it back and selling the parts off.

Yes I could just wait and buy a MYP but that’s no fun, I’m experienced in modifying cars having done several custom ICE builds but before I do anything I’m wanting to ensure this is actually viable. I won’t be doing anything on the HV cabling as will be done by an EV specialist. Yes I know it will effect my warranty if I went though with it.

If I can find the right motor I’ll get the Ghost module to get the full power output.

My MY is a 2022 from the Giga Shanghai factory with the 990 motor. So my questions are.

- can anyone please check the motor and product code on an MYP that’s a 2022 model?
- Would any year 980 motor and inverter fit by use of the same mounting points and connecting plugs.? If not what
- Can the LR driveshafts be used?

Given the scaling of Tesla I would assume they should all be interchangeable and just be the motor internals and inventor changed.

Any advise / help would be appreciated, thanks!!

I’ve not worked on the 3/Y architecture before, but I’ve done work on the S/X and you cannot swap motor types without updating the car configuration in the gateway, and, likely some other required hardware changes depending on the intended swap.

I very much doubt, with strong emphasis, that you can simply swap the motor and inverter and it will work.

Hi, thanks for the reply! From my understanding it’s not a change in motor type with the 990 and 980 being of the same casing but updated internals and output. This is something I’m attempting to confirm but seams difficult to get firm answers.

The additional upgrades aside there in error and motor would be the ghosts module to have the system understand the change and put out the desired output but again something I’m struggling to confirm.

I’m keen to do this over buying a performance in a couple of years having now fully PPF the Y with several other upgrades/changes some that are removable others not.

I better get diving into the depths of the internet to see if I can figure this out. If it’s not feasible I’ll have to take the hit on the installs and get a P as planned in a few years.

Once the mechanical swapping is done you should now be able to fix the software side and get it working by going into the service mode and re-flashing the firmware. There may be some other calibrations or service mode plus but it’s possible to diy this upgrade
