My MY delivery experience at Rocklin, CA delivery center

I picked up my MY last Saturday, white exterior, black interior, dual-motor, long range, 19" wheels, hitch option. It was ordered Dec 2019. VIN=20xxx. This is my first Tesla.

I was armed with three checklists and ready to reject the car if there were any serious issues. My wife and I combed through the car for about an hour and noted all the issues. We put blue painter's tape on the issue spots and took pictures.

Staff at the delivery center was courteous and friendly, but, likely due to end of quarter push (and partly due to Covid-19 restriction), they appeared to be there mainly to push the cars out as fast as possible. We arrived early because we had also scheduled a test drive, realizing that they weren't going to let us test drive the exact VIN we were matched up with. Test drive was 10-15 minutes. With about half an hour to kill, we walked around the lot and found our car based on the VIN before our scheduled delivery time and were able to inspect the exterior. It was in full sun (good for paint inspection, bad for us in 95 degree heat). There were no paint match issues between panels. Panel fit and gaps looked good overall with minor exceptions. The charge port was perfectly aligned.

At the scheduled time, we met our 'delivery specialist'. He asked for the payment due (we planned to pay the balance with personal check). I asked to inspect the car first. He pushed back a bit, saying he can't unlock the car until I pay and accept delivery. I very kindly told him that I need to inspect the inside before I can pay and accept delivery. He said "let me see what I can do", and went inside the building. He came out in a few minutes, walked to the car with us and allowed us to inspect it as long as we wanted. We asked if it was possible to move the car to a shady location and he said no (bummer). He then left us alone.

The car was 80% charged, and had only 4 miles on it. Great.

Issues found (some of them I noticed after we came home):
  • Frunk cover was slightly misaligned (right side of logo lower than the left side). Easily fixed at home with the bumper nuts underneath the cover.
  • Very minor panel mismatch (overlap) near the passenger side headlight.
  • Two small bunched up sections (bumps) on door seals.
  • One section of fabric headliner not tucked underneath the rubber trim.
  • One sensor cover in the front looks slightly pushed in on one side.
  • One nut missing on the wheel well cover (all the nuts in wheel wells were plastic and seemed loose, as if they could easily pull out).
  • Couldn't inspect the hitch as I didn't want to pry open the cover - they said check YouTube videos (lousy answer). I checked it at home. It was very easy to open with a flathead screwdriver. It's soft plastic and very pliable. A little harder to close. Once all the clips are straight and aligned, it pops back in very easily.
  • Front passenger left side of the carpeted floor is not tucked in behind the console plastic, a few inches long.
  • One coat hook gets stuck once you close it (pushing the bottom of it releases it, and it can be opened again).
  • Both sides of the headliner right in the middle (above the midline between front and rear seats) feels like they are not attached properly. They are loose when you push on them, but they look ok.
  • There were a few sticky residue left on the exterior. Easily cleaned with Goo Gone.
  • There were a few dark smudges on the headliner. Easily cleaned with Folex carpet cleaner.
We decided that none of these were showstoppers (though some were sad to see on a brand new car. I was not surprised by them after having read others' delivery experiences). Delivery specialist told us to report any paint and glass issues before 100 miles. Everything else is covered under warranty. I handed over the check, opened the app, and accepted the delivery.

After bringing her home (~60 miles, and yes, it's a she), I inspected the paint and glass again, and found no issues worth reporting before the 100 miles. The colors matched perfectly. Even a scratch I thought I found on the hatchback window turned out to be a sticky residue. There was a pinhole size area that I noticed was touched up. Didn't think that was worth writing up.

Overall I am very happy with it. I plan to keep an eye on any new issues for a few more weeks and then schedule a service for all the issues noticed.

Hope this was helpful. Reply to this thread if you have any questions.

No question, Just congratulation. Got my Model Y about two weeks ago, VIN 6XXX, and it was perfect. I found some wax or clearcoat issues in the shade that I tried to buff off, and didn't get too aggressive, when two marks did not easily disappear, so I set up a service call. Took the car in, got a loaner, and it was done the next morning. could not find the issue and so, far nothing else turned up.

My guess is you never from the satisfied people; well I am one who had any real issues and love the car.

Congrats on your new MY! Your delivery experience sounds similar to mine, and it sounds like you took the time to inspect it well. One suggestion, though: do run your car through a car wash this week. I'll admit that I'm the "squeaky wheel," so to speak, but I discovered a major leak in the roof this past Saturday when I did that. I wish I'd discovered it within the first 7 days, but it wasn't apparent until it got wet.

Good suggestion. Thank you.
