You might not want too sell the Prius yet! In all honesty. Tesla has always struggled with their build quality. Part of me thought they were doing better but now I’m in doubt.

I went over @LBusDoor90 M3 today top too bottom, and was surprised by the quality of the vehicle. The gaps were not the size of the Grand Canyon like early M3s, but the paint work had many errors. There were numerous contaminants under it, which showed and you could feel through the paint. I presume dirt. There were marks left by a buffer which showed attempted repair. The trim pieces along the window were misaligned on both sides just enough too notice. No rattles and a great ride, and an overall great car.

A few weeks ago there was post from a model 3 buyer asking if it was safe to leave immediately for a road trip. I told him no, drive around for a few days to see if your car is going to work. Everyone else told him don't worry it will be fine. Sucks that these cars are so reliably unreliable, but that's the way it is. I'm sure they'll get your gremlins solved, but I would NOT take a road trip in the first few hundred miles of ownership.

I don't like what you said here, but it sure is practical advice I'd follow. Still doesn't mean I have to like it ;):p

I think your observations are more generally true than is admitted. If one has tendencies toward OCD or perfectionism, bowing out from the purchase might be beneficial for one's mental health.

Bingo. I’m fortunate enough NOT to have my nephew’s OCD demands (see above) since 27 combined years of Ford Escort and Toyota Prius led me to gradually discover ripples and trapped contaminants in and under the paint and clear coat of each over time. With each discovery?....a shrug. My black 3 is amazing and the staff at the new store in Cherry Hill, NJ treated me like family and were as excited to hand it over to me as I was to get it. So far, my 159XX is perfect to me.
Now, the painful one week wait to get it back from my PPF/ceramic guy. :(

I agree it’s a great car, and can’t wait too experience it’s power and acceleration.

I enjoyed being part of the delivery experience, and would relive that day every day of I could. But, as i am studying paint and bodywork tech in an adult tech school, I do tend too notice the imperfections. But in all honesty it wasn’t that bad just simple fixes.

Providing an update to anyone who cares. They are replacing both the drive unit and battery pack. They said after it was brought in, the car malfunctioned even more and would no longer turn on. They tested the battery and it was no good. Why the drive unit was replaced too, I’m not sure. I suspect they replaced that first then when it still wasn’t working right, they tested the battery. Whatever it was hopefully it is resolved.
Were you given a timeline for the battery replacement? I just found out my battery is faulty after 6 days and less than 300 miles and needs to be replaced. I was able to drive to service center under reduced power though. Not as scary as your story, though still disappointing.

Yes and No. It went down on a Saturday. They said hopefully that upcoming Monday I’d have it back. Then they told me that Monday they need a few more days. Then more days again. Then again. Today they said hopefully tomorrow. It will be two weeks this Saturday. The battery is in, but now they’re missing some parts (“bolts”) apparently and are waiting for them to come in. 2 days with the car, almost 2 weeks without. Sigh.....

Well, it's encouraging that they have your battery in hand already at least. It's a bit more complicated to replace than on the S or X, so I'm not surprised the service guys encountered some hangups.

Did you escalate your issue to Tesla management through your Tesla account? I did last night and got a reply from a rep today. I'm hoping that will make a difference in the speed to resolution.

It's a service center... they don't have a huge assortment of bolts on hand and have to order them? That sounds... weird.
Well, to give them the benefit of the doubt, this could very well be their first Model 3 battery swap, and the bolts in question could be unique to that battery. Sounds like the sort of thing they wouldn't have in excess supply just yet.

They actually called me after my post. I asked for clarification on the hang up and they basically confirmed the inexperience part. They said their folks don’t have a lot of experience changing out the battery (comforting...) for these cars, so when they shipped my bad battery out they shipped the accompanying bolts with it. When they received the new battery, it didn’t come with bolts. They were supposed to have kept the bolts apparently, but since they hadn’t done much of these before they didn’t know.

Also they confirmed that they tried switching out my drive unit first and still had the errors, which led to the battery discovery. They said they then put my original drive unit back. It seems like it’s trial and error. I hope they got the issue right. I’d be lying to you if I told you I was really confident with the outcome.

Just saw your perplexing disagree a month later. Repainting does take some skill because I've had to get my problem areas readdressed 2 times now (paint run, dirt in the paint, accelerated oxidation risk due to poor application to underlying metal, etc). Hopefully, this time (with another body shop) is the charm because I've been without 8 weeks now. This is NOT something I'd want to experience again.

That’s terrible. @LBusDoor90 Model 3 didn’t have nearly as many paint imperfections as some other owners, but the ones it had were easy fixes. By the way you have described it, yours were severe, which is unfortunate. Best of luck!

@Jpjpjp , status on the car? Hopefully you've had it back for a while by now and curious how things have been going.

Yeah I got it back a while ago. They comped me a free annual maintenance for my trouble. Car has been great. I’m having some issues currently with one of the door seals coming loose, which is quite annoying and will get it addressed by the service center. Otherwise, no major issues to report after getting my car back! *knocks on wood*
