My Terrible & Wonderful CPO Experience

Let me start off by saying that, like most of you, I am a huge Elon & Tesla fan. He's just one of those guys that you can't help but root for. As an entrepreneur, inventor and business owner I am especially drawn to him. Since the Roadster, I have dreamed of owning a Tesla. I am a gear head by hobby and appreciate things new and exciting. Until recently this was a really far off dream for me. My first business took a big hit when the economy tanked in 08-09 and my family barely managed to survive. A series of random events led me to start a 2nd business creating virtual pinball machines in 2014. This led to catching the eye of the producers at Shark Tank and the rest is history. After partnering with Daymond John, both businesses have really taken off and afforded us this amazing opportunity.

I ordered a CPO P85+ back in early October. I am in Cincinnati and the car was in Massachusetts. To save money I figured I would fly in and drive it home while the weather was still decent. My advisor was very friendly and explained the process and that it could take a few weeks to get the car. I was a little bummed but excited to hear that the car would be reconditioned to a like new state and was told to be prepared to be blown away. That was exciting so I decided to sit back and enjoy the anticipation. After a few weeks went buy I started pestering her a bit to get some actual photos of the car and an update on the progress. She was very responsive but had no real information other than they were working on it. I then found this great forum and read where this was kind of the norm and some folks waited 6 weeks or more so I attempted to be patient a bit longer.

Week 7-8 roll around and I began to put a bit of pressure on her to get me the car. One because I was getting worried about 21" summer tires making it back from the east coast in winter and 2 because this was a business purchase and I needed to close the deal by year end. She informed me that it was just about ready and offered to ship the car all the way to Wexford, PA for free!! This was great because that was only 4 hours from me instead of 14. The car was shipped to Wexford the day after Thanksgiving and was supposed to just need a quick cleaning and then be ready for pickup. After a few days of not hearing anything I was told that the car was not quite up to par with the Wexford team and they needed some more time to take care of a few issues. I was once again super bummed but appreciated that they were looking out for me. I was now even more excited to see this amazing car! After being at Wexford a couple weeks I was finally given the green light to pick up my car on December 9th!

We woke up super early that morning and made the drive to Wexford. The weather wasn't looking good so I took a set of OEM 19" wheels with new snow tires. The Wexford SC gladly agreed to swap them out for me. Upon arriving we were greeted by some very friendly folks and were instructed to hang out in the waiting area for about 30 min while they got the car in the delivery bay. The free coffee and doughnuts were much appreciated after the long drive. Our delivery specialist finally grabbed us to look at the car before they swapped tires for us.

At first glance, even from 15 feet away, I could tell something was up. The front grill was covered in dead bugs that had obviously been there a while. It’s winter now and there aren't really any bugs to hit. Once we got closer we were very surprised to see how poor of condition the paint was in. It is apparent that the car was not really detailed or any paint correction done before delivery. It was however very poorly waxed and scratched up pretty bad. I could tell that the good folks at Wexford were aware of this and felt a bit uncomfortable. Once looking inside the vehicle I was even more surprised with some of the interior condition. These are all things that should have been addressed at the Dedham location while they had it for such a long time.

I firmly believe that the Dedham SC did absolutely nothing to the car to refurbish it. It was dirty even inside. Look at the crusted junk in the Yacht Floor. I understand why Wexford needed it longer than expected as they told me that they had to replace some suspension pieces as well.

The brakes weren't even addressed as all 4 of them had deep grooves in all the rotors.

The windshield has a good chip in it that could not have ben accidentally overlooked.

I had asked my CPO advisor in the beginning to see if Dedham could do the LTE upgrade and the TPMS at an additional cost to me but they didn't. On the way home the TPMS system quit working and there was a service message on the car.

Wexford was great at creating a due bill and agreed that the condition issues were not acceptable. They seemed upset at why Dedham would send them a car like this. If it weren't for driving so far and the need to have a car by year end we would have walked and had our CPO advisor find us another one. I passed on a few really nice private owner P85’s because of how awesome the Tesla CPO experience was supposed to be.

After getting home I sent a very polite but disappointed email to my CPO advisor. She called me and was very upset at what all had transpired. She assured me that this was not the norm and that it would be taken care of at my local Blue Ash service center. The following Monday, Todd, the local service manager contacted me to bring the car in so they could make things right. Once I arrived there I was greeted by 3 people who informed me that they were basically tearing up my old due bill and starting the CPO process from scratch. They went over every aspect of the car with me and even pointed out some new things that they wanted to fix. I again requested to pay for the LTE and TPMS upgrades and they said they would gladly do it and not charge me a dime! They even put new sensors in my spare set of winter wheels for free. Now this was the experience I was hoping for!! A few minutes later Todd returned with a big box. Inside was that really sweet black/red Tesla storage bag that fits neatly in the frunk. He gave to to me for free and said it was their las one.

Needless to say I left there a very happy man in a AP1 85 loaner. It wasn't quite as nice as my P85+ but still great to drive. This past Friday Todd called and said that he needed that car back but had a new Model X 100D for my holiday weekend. That really made for a fun Christmas weekend for the whole family.

I am supposed to be picking up my car today or tomorrow for my CPO delivery take 2. I am once again very excited to see what all the Blue Ash SC has done to make this the experience that I had hoped for. I am very thankful for this great community and all the valuable information I have learned the last few months.

Here are a few pics of the first delivery. I will post updated pics when we take delivery again this week.

Congrats and welcome to the club!

The P85+ is a really great car to own and drive. It's really sad that Tesla discontinued the Performance+ suspension after the P85+ and the the early P85Ds.

Some of us consider the P85+ an instant classic (as far as Tesla's are concerned).

Thanks! Just picked up the car and it is much better! All mechanical issues and 99% of the cosmetic issues were addressed. We are looking forward to years of enjoyment.
