My Tesla buying/servicing/after sale support experience

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
I spent years reading every Tesla article I could find and months scouring this forum before I committed our hard earned money to purchasing a Tesla. There are so many horror stories, some real and some concocted to try to knock Tesla out of business or short sell the stock. These fears were compounded as there is no service center in my state if I experienced major issues.

My experience

I ordered my Model 3 performance on January 13th 2020 and received the vehicle on March 13th.

I received a follow up phone call 4 hours after my online purchase.
Tesla contacted me 1-2 times per week each week until the car was delivered either by phone or email.
Every email and phone call question I had was answered during this time.

I drove to Kansas City and took delivery. They were very friendly, did not seem rushed even though the Model Y deliveries were starting to pile up. Delivery was crazy quick and efficient.

My car looked beautiful. The paint was clean all around and the panel gaps reasonably well aligned and tight. It did have a couple issues:
1) Neither trunk light worked
2) Both front doors were harder to close than should be expected

I ordered the homelink and opened a service call on the doors and trunk lights. Charlie the mobile ranger arrived at my house a few days later and installed the homelink, connected the trunk light wires and better seated the door seals which resolved all my issues.

As I neared the expiration of my temporary tags my registration paperwork had still not arrived. I emailed my service center, they responded within an hour and my paperwork arrived 24 hours later.

Today, I received a follow up call from the Texas service center to make sure everything was going well with my vehicle. He answered questions and sent me some additional information on my car.

The Vehicle

I don't feel that the build quality is quite up to my previous Audi or Porsche but its not that far off. The driving experience on the other hand is simply next level. The car is quiet, smooth, crazy fast with surprisingly good handling and amazing brakes. The one footed driving in traffic is almost reason enough to switch to an EV. The software updates bring new features and bug fixes. We never would have even considered this from the manufactures I worked for in the past. There is virtually no maintenance which will no doubt terrify the existing vehicle dealerships. The bulk of the money on new cars is made on service after the sale, not during the sale.

Summary

I am posting this to pass on my experience, especially since most people only post if they are unhappy. As an ex-factory mechanic I have spent more than my share of time around vehicles of many brands across multiple dealers. Quite honestly, this is my best new vehicle purchase experience to date. Time will tell how the long term support, reliability and true ownership experience work out for me but so far my Model 3 Performance is simply amazing to own and drive. Long distance trips have been a breeze and waking up to a "full tank" so to speak is wonderful. I am hoping I will be just as positive a year or two from now. Fingers crossed.

Its always nice to hear the other side. Tesla does have issues for sure, but my own interactions with them have been, from Great, to decent, with the drop off usually occuring in level of communication they provide when I engage them about something.

Congrats on your car!

I've had a great experience with Tesla. A few hiccups at the beginning. The USB hub up front did not work upon arrival. Mobile tech came out a week later and replaced it. The lumbar support driver side stopped working at about 1500 miles. Again mobile tech came out and replaced the motor. At 7500 miles mobile tech came out and did a rotation which I paid for but much easier for me than going somewhere. I've had a couple questions which I just set an appointment up and put my questions in there. I get a call back and they explain everything for me. I've had a top notch experience with them. I know plenty of people have had bad experiences. Not sure why, maybe they came from some high end dealerships with everyone wearing top hats, tuxedos and monocles. Anyway, it is a new technology so there is a lot of complaining about battery degredation ( including me) I'm learning still and I am starting to feel better about these things.

My overall experience was similar. Good communication and follow-up. When I dealt with my SA, I felt he really cared about helping me through the whole process. It also helped that he was very knowledgeable about the car and could answer all my questions on the spot.
So far so good.

I also had a great experience. I ordered my M3 on Jan 17th, had delivery on Jan 27th. Easy process, car with no issues, sales person helped me get set it up in around 20 min. Regular and periodic notifications during whole process.

That’s a good review and similar to my experience. I chose a Dual Motor with 19” all seasons, then added the Acceleration Boost package. Plenty quick for my daily driving needs.
I ordered it on Jan 7 and it arrived on Feb 20.
I added the wireless phone charge pad, tinted windows 35%, and added an aftermarket audio system that integrates with the factory music system. Means much better sound up front while retaining surround sound. Dynaudio Esotan 372 speakers w Helix V Eight amp/DSP.
I love that there is no maintenance. Just charge overnight on my 240v outlet (cost $60 in Home Depot parts). Then drive and enjoy.
The traction control system and balance is insanely good. It’s almost impossible to lose grip in any weather. Car feels extremely safe and controlled to drive. It’s like an electric Bmw M3, but faster and handles curves better. It slingshoots out of corners using torque vectoring. Means no wheel slip and as much power as you want. It’s an advanced high performance sedan that competes with cars costing twice as much. Perfect for suburban life.

I also had a very good buying experience. My Model 3 was scheduled for pick-up in Paramus, NJ a few days after New Jersey issued stay home orders and the Paramus location had to close. The day the stay home order was issued I received a text from Tesla informing me that they would now be delivering my car to my home in New Hampshire (at no additional charge) and only 3 days after the original pick-up date was scheduled. I have to say that I was thrilled not to have the 10 hour round trip drive to pick up the car. Delivery was quick because of social distancing, I signed the delivery form and he left, although he was very pleasant and enthusiastic during our short interaction. I have to say that every step of the way Tesla was very responsive. I love the car. I’m still a little anxious about the decision to buy a Tesla, after driving ICE vehicles for 35 years this is a real paradigm shift and I doubt that I will be totally comfortable with my decision until I had the car for a couple of years and it has proven to be a reliable vehicle. However, in the meantime, I am certainly enjoying the driving experience!!!

I agree with your experience. I received my M3 LRAWD in late March. The tech came out to install my HomeLink and adjusted a window and door latch. That is it. I did have a defective key fob that I ordered and he brought me a new one. Excellent service and a car I really look for excuses to drive. My best and most fun car yet.

Thanks for sharing! I also purchased my first Tesla and pure EV this year (I did own a Ford C-Max Energi PHEV in the past, but it was *not* an ideal Midwestern car, in several respects. I accepted delivery of my used Model S 70D this past January, had a similarly positive delivery experience (Tesla, Westmont, IL), and positive service/support experiences (mobile and at the service center, all for minor issues, Tesla, Highland Park, IL). During this lockdown, one of the few breaths of fresh air (dual meaning intended) has been my Model S. Just going for a drive to the pharmacy, experiencing the acceleration/handling, or letting the car drive me, sometimes turns bad day into a better one.

The only downside? I really do miss waiting in line at the gas station......NOT!

My experience is a little different than yours but I’m still satisfied only by the virtue of the car.
I ordered mine, M3 Performance, December 2, 2019. I received an automated notice about insurance sometime later. On. December 18, I received a text that the car would be ready for pick up in less than 48 hours. It caused quite a lot of turmoil because of short notice.
Getting any information, much less timely information from Tesla is like pulling teeth. They are very poor at communication - honestly, I’m glad your experience is different than the majority.
My most recent experience was a 10 day process to get a tire repair. AFTER waiting 5 days mobile repair texted and said a tire repair requires a Service Center Appointment - the mobile people never came to look at the tire - just have to do the Service Center thing. No one knew 5 days before? Then I made a Service Center appointment - 5 day wait for that. Car out of service for 10 days for a nail - a repair commonly done without getting a Service Center involved turns into 10 days? If I’d known it would take more than a week, I’d have taken wheel/tire to Wallymart or Big 10 or whatever. I’d already jacked the car and removed it to make it as easy as possible.
A love my car and I’ll buy another Tesla, I even recommend Tesla to people I meet. But Tesla, as a company, kind of sucks. The good news is they have lots of room for improvement - lots of room.

My experience with the New Orleans service center is fantastic. I keep our 2012 Sig Model S #94 in New Orleans for when we are there. They were still hand making cars when mine was built. Problems do crop up and I have had some phantom problems that are hard to diagnose. The New Orleans center is consistently helpful, persistent and more importantly smart about diagnosing those issues. So happy with my car in their hands.

I've had my Model 3 for a year now. I've only had to go to the Dallas Service Center once, but the experience was great. They gave me a Model S as a loaner and told me it works JUST like my Model 3. LOL. No! I was too embarrassed to ask for help - it took me 15 minutes to figure out how to adjust the steering wheel so I could see the speed.

I love my car. I have not had a Porsche or Audi or anything else comparable. I just know I am one happy customer.

I too have found Tesla to be overly helpful! A very enjoyable place to deal with. I purchased my Model S P85 in Dec. 2012. Yes, we do consider it an alpha. After taking it on a 5540 mile trip in 2013, we had several issues. Two rocks had hit the windshield in the last three days of the trip! Also a rear window mechanism broke and the window wanted to drop to the bottom always. We got back late on a Friday night. Since we had contacted Tesla on the trip, they already had an appointment scheduled for Monday morning. They would not even let us ask our insurance to pay for the windshield. They said the crack at one of the impact points was a stress fracture that was their fault. They fixed the rear window mechanism too!
Once I did get in trouble with them though. That was when I told TMC about the upcoming AWD Model S. It wasn't announced yet but I had heard about it coming but didn't know I wasn't supposed to tell.
When my son purchased his Model 3 in 2018 we picked it up at the Fremont delivery center. There were dozens of people there and not surprisingly had to wait a while for our turn. But once it was our turn, we were treated like royalty!
Probably the only issue I've had is that since I bought the car so early, and purchased the extended warranty, they never can find the warranty when they first look. But when I press them they can always find it.
Only late last year did we start to notice any significant battery degradation. We are down about 25 miles range at 90% charge these days. Tesla says it seems to be just battery uneven state and that it should likely fix itself eventually.
I just hope it either dies or gets fixed before Dec. this year, as that is the end of the extended warranty!!!
Good luck all on dealing with Tesla. Just remember that if you treat the service folks as if they are trying to help you, which they are, they will treat you very well right back!!!
And, lastly, hope you are all surviving the C19 nightmare OK!

Hi all... first post here. I’ve had my Blue M3 Performance for a little over three weeks and was really pleased with the touchless delivery service. The car was just a about perfect on delivery. Electricians are wiring up my 240V garage line at this very minute.

There was a little confusion on the delivery date and location thanks to the COVID situation, but not worth bitching about. Delivery specialists were uniformly knowledgeable and helpful. Looking to tint the windows, but don’t have other mods planned... but I’m interested to hear ideas. I have owned Porsche and Audi... I, do miss the roar of a powerful V8, but have no intention of ever going back!

We rejected two M3s before we took the 3rd. LOVE the car! Wasn't clear to me whether Tesla would rotate the tires for free or not. They ended up coming to my house and didn't even charge me! Super nice guy did the work!

Got rear ended at a light a week after we got the car. :-( (Driver behind me was stopped and let his foot off the brake for a second.) Very little damage to the bumper, but the Tesla Body Shop took off the bumper and replaced it. Cheaper than the independents and the work was flawless. Getting through to the Body Shop was not easy at first, but was great after I finally did.

I like what one guy said when asked what he does while his car is being charged--he sleeps. There are so many advantages to an EV and especially a Tesla (constant OTA improvements at NO charge!!! Who else does that???)

I never expected Lexus service, which I don't need. There are clearly things that could be improved. (What company is perfect? NONE!)

I GREATLY admire what the Team TESLA has done. They're AMAZING and the world desperately needs more of these people/teams! Swimming against the ENORMOUS, subsidized Earth damaging fossil fuel industry, conservative naysayers, etc. is a herculean task and they've accomplished a ton! I hope they can keep it going!

I want a Model Y!

Great thread, nice to hear positive notes about Tesla.
I've been buying new cars since 1963 so don't talk to me about dealers, 1st car White Chevy Impala Convertible. The back window zipper failed to complete, father in-law got soaked.
2nd car Olds Cutlass Blue, was delivered to my business on a drizzly day, front seat was soaking, went back to dealer and was parked in an alley and was damaged by ice falling off their roof.
3rd Chevy Impala Lime Green, probably the best car for being able to work on.
4th Ford Elite, (leased) better if I should have bought an Edsel, paint peeled the first month from the entire rear 1/4 panel, the trunk was not accessible due to the spare wheel, all tires blew within weeks of one another, all steel belted, carburettor would flame out, at no time would the dealer accept responsibility. I ended the lease in 18 months, just parked it outside the dealer.
5th car Volkswagen Rabbit, peppy but too small for a family, fiddly little problems and rust.
6th car Audi's 1st year, Wankel 5 cylinder engine, car was delivered to me a week after I had ordered it I was told it had to go thru a stringent dealer check over, German engineering. Holiday weekend driving downtown started to show hot, parked it quickly, to late it cracked the head, even dealing with Volkswagen Germany got me know where
7th car. Volvo, was almost stolen in New York city wished it had been, couldn't get rid of it fast enough, shocks, rust, you name it, plus the kids called it the toaster.
8th car, Honda Accord, the best car for 10yrs, couldn't kill it, daughter had it for college, gave it to high-school auto-class.
Went thru a series of leased Chrysler vans, 4 in all, each with it's own headaches, the worst being the harness burning up in rush hour traffic, I ran five red lights knowing full well that if I stopped so would the van, pulled into the driveway, you're right dead.
13th car, leased Hyundia XG 300, love the ride in this car. Maintenance was high and so was gas, leasing was tricky on return.
14th car, back to leased Honda Accord, I totally did not like this car, ride, feel, went thru tires, closed the lease out four month early, dealer irked.
2007 Bought a 2004 Hyundia XG 350, private deal for $7500, 6900 miles, had a bent rear control bar easy fix. Great ride.
2011 bought a 2006 Jaguar S Type on eBay while vacationing in Florida, very low miles, absolutely love this car. Nightmare having shipped to Canada, but that's another story.
The Jag I'll save because it is beautiful and is only driven for show.
Gave the Hyundia to my granddaughter last year, and bought a 2015 Tesla S 85D in August..
Plug and go, what could be easier than that.
When I see the blue sky this week because billions of ICE vehicles are off the roads only confirms my reasons for buying the Tesla
The other reasons are no oil changes, valves, plugs, air compressors, transmissions, gear boxes, etc.
In all the years of buying cars I can't pinpoint one dealer that I could say was forthright, they all fell short after the sale.
