Mystery item in rear cubby at delivery

Anybody know what this is? It was in the back in the cubby under the floor of the rear hatch when I picked up my new Model S 100D a month ago. Didn't lift the cubby cover when I inspected the car at delivery center, so I didn't notice this sitting in there until I got home. Very heavy metal, 14" long, looks brand new as zero scrapes or other indications it has been used as a tool in manufacturing or anything like that.

It’s your tow hook that attaches to the front of the car.

Thanks. Weird that they deliver the car with it just lying there. Would expect they'd have a place for it to be securely stored. Wasn't that way in my prior S85.

It is the towing eye, but I have never found the socket for it in the front of the car. That is, if it is needed, where do you screw it in? Other cars have a small square “hatch” in the front bumper cover you pry out to expose the socket.

I think it really sucks they stopped making a spot for it under the carpet. The M3 has one and the older MS had one, seems very odd they would leave it out of the updated MS.

It's your tow hook. Don't lose it! But hope you never need it.
That's odd -- I never got one of those with my 2015 85D. Should I have? My car was an inventory car that had been used as a loaner; a few things were missing at delivery (like the rear "85D" badge!) but it never even occurred to me I should have received a tow eye.

Yes, I would call your SC and ask for it. You might want to check under the carpet in the frunk for yours

I has same vehicle. In the bottom of my charger bag - separate zippered section

The tow hook in our refreshed March 2017 75D was loose in our car as well. Does not fit in the charger bag. Believe we ended up putting ours in one of the side well areas of the rear cargo section with the charger bag on top of it to keep it in place. We also have a cargo organizer in our lower cargo section I suppose it could go in, however more easily accessable and noticeable in the upper cargo section I guess.

Our Delivery Specialist told us what it was during delivery and we read up on it in the manual later. BTW OP did you find your box with the phone charger parts in your car too? (think ours was left in the glove box).

Nope. I was told iPhone charging adapter/parts no longer included and had to order separately from Tesla, which I did. Took delivery in October, btw.

My Sept 2017 75D's tow hook fits in the charger bag. It's not a great fit but I was able to get it zipped back up (without the charger in the bag).

Unfortunately, in many accidents where they need to use the tow hook, the car also has a crumpled hood that is very hard to open, and impossible to close. Keeping the hook in the passenger compartment makes more sense.

fyi photos and a bit more info about the two different sizes of two hooks (older 12" vs newer 14") and how they fit/don't fit the UMC bag, in this older thread here: Tow Hook Storage?

yeah, so even though my Model S has the molded spot to store the tow hook in the front, I took it out of there and keep it in the UMC bag in the trunk for easier access
