Going on a long driving vacation for spring break and I feel like I should get my paint armor on before the trip.

There is a local guy with a good reputation who does 3M.

But the "self healing" properties of XPEL sound attractive.

Has anyone in the Bay Area had their Model S front end wrapped in XPEL? I'd like an experienced installer.

    Thanks!

I've heard of this stuff and they use it where I get my details done. I thought it was more of a clear coat.

Will it really protect against front end road debris dings as well as a clear film?

Any firsthand experience would be greatly appreciated.

Uh oh. Not sure exactly how to answer that, but maybe more info on their web site. I had my guys at Al & Ed's http://www.AE54.com apply it to my Roadster in 2009 and my hood is still pristine. They also applied it to my interior to repel spills and no issues there also. Maybe contact either Al & Ed's or the manufacturer directly?

Bump. Any recommendations? I called Premier but they don't use XPEL. I've heard a lot of good things about XPEL so I was hoping to get it.

Also if anyone is wondering they quoted me $8000 for a full wrap of my P85.

I wound up going to Premiere. I can't complain about the service or the quality of their work. Really top notch.

They don't use XPEL but the product they do use is excellent. Not sure about how it compares but I have no regrets.

    They are expensive, though.

I took my new P85 to East Bay Auto Spa in Walnut Creek, who did a fine job applying XPEL Ultimate for less than half the price of Premiere's service.

I had everything but the trunk done. They pretty much charge XPEL's list price for the coating, and include labor in that.

(They applied the "full hood, fender, and mirror, bumper, doors, a-piller and roof" kits for $2500, and the "rear fender" kit for $650)

I was out of town last week anyway, so I let them keep the car while I was away.. I think Ron said it was about 2-3 days work to do it really well.

My only comment about the XPEL kits for model S is the mirror protector covers only the bottom 2/3 of the mirror holders, so there is a slight film line visible on the mirrors if you look.. you pretty much can't see the film on any other part of the vehicle.

Incidentally, they also do audio upgrades for high end vehicles there, but I was afraid to be the first Tesla tester of their work. If someone else has them do a sound upgrade while they are applying your paint protection, please let me know how it turns out.

I haven't yet done my MS yet, but am going to this coming Friday. After searching through several blogs and forums, I'm using Greg Simms (Force Field; but it seems like a one man shop) - 408.691.6791. I don't know yet how he will be, but other MS and Ferrari owners have raved about his work (he mainly does Ferraris, but lately, he's been doing MS paint armor work - he said he has 3 this week).

He uses XPEL Ultimate, and in my discussion with him, he said its the best film out there. Elite Auto Films (also on the peninsula) also uses the same film.

Premiere Protective Films in Fremont uses a proprietary film from a parent company (Prestige?). Its hard to say how it compares with XPEL. I did speak with at least one technician that has used both the XPEL and the Premiere product, who decided that the XPEL outperformed the Premiere product (and thus uses XPEL now). He also said that both were very high quality products though, so the difference may not be that consequential.

Finally, when I was looking into this, I got quotes for just full front hood, fenders, and bumpers from Premiere, Elite Auto Films, and Force Field. Premiere was the most expensive, then Force Field, then Elite Auto Films. All of them were highly reviewed in blogs/forums/yelp.

Are you happy with the job they did putting film on your Model S? Are there any seams visible around the lights on the side? Do you know if he uses a kit or does custom cutting himself. How did he handle the mirrors?

I've used Premiere on my previous car and for the window tinting on my P85+ and have been very happy with the service. I think part of what drives the price up is they often custom cut the pieces for the car instead of using a kit, especially for a lower volume or new car.

I was trying to talk them into giving me a discount to wrap the whole car in the Satin Guard and let them use it for marketing but another shop (posts are elsewhere on the forum) did a matte wrap on a blue Model S and they wanted to be the first.

My boss used him for his 458 when he took delivery of it. He had his mirrors and nose done several times because he wasn't happy and my boss really is not as picky as I am.

We used Premiere in Fremont shortly just after taking delivery of our P85+ last summer. Extremely happy with them. When we picked up the MS, my wife thought nothing was done because she could not see the armor on the paint. We did the entire front and still cannot tell there is anything on the car. Premiere also did the photosynch on the car when temperatures were reaching over 100. Car is much cooler and the photosynch tint installation is very high quality.

I originally purchased the Tesla factory paint armor and was really dissatisfied with it. I just had Elite re-do the Model S with Xpel and I'm very happy with both the product and their work. They also do all the work for The McLaren dealership in Palo Alto.

I've used Greg with Premier for my Photosync tint and used Joe at Orinda Auto Detail for the Opti-Coat and Xpel. Both did a great job. Each has it strengths. Premier with the Photosync is top notch and will use them for the Escort install once the Tesla Center Console comes in. Joe at Orinda Auto Detail is top notch with the Opti-coat, Xpel and the 2nd coating of Opti-coat. Can't go wrong with them.

Can I ask how much the Opti-Coat was both the first full and the second?

We looked around the Sacramento area for a wrap and settled on Appearance Solutions to wrap 80% of our new Red Model S, and add some window tinting. We looked closely the work quality they had just done on another Model S before choosing them and handing over our baby. Looked great, and our car came out the same way. They used XPEL Ultimate. I gather they do a lot of the Teslas in our region. Very convenient to work with as we set a date and they came out to pick the car up, did a complete wash and then delivered it done two days later. I don't know if they would travel to the Bay Area. They can be reached at 916-402-9325. Ask for Michael Justis.
