I'm not sure why I am having trouble finding up to date information about the sales tax rate, but does anyone know how much a new vehicle is taxed at its sale in Cook County?

This is the best that I could find:
    http://tax.illinois.gov/taxforms/Sales/VehicleUseTax/RUT-25-Instr.pdf

Use 6.25 percent (.0625) unless listed below
Cook County = 7.25 percent (.0725) except for Bensenville, Elmhurst,
Hinsdale, Oak Brook, Roselle, or Woodridge = 7.50 percent (.075)
DuPage County = 7.25 percent (.0725) except for outside of DuPage
    Water Commission = 7.0 percent (.07) or West Chicago = 7.0 percent (.07)
Will County = 7.0 percent (.07) except for Naperville or
    Woodridge = 7.25 percent (.0725)
Kane, Lake, and McHenry counties = 7.0 percent (.07)
Madison and St. Clair counties = 6.5 percent (.065) except for outside
the Metro East Transit District = 6.25 percent (.0625)

You will need to pay three taxes in Cook County: (i) vehicle sales tax for your area (look up here), (ii) Cook County Use Tax of 1% (Ordinance here), and (iii) $15.00 New Motor Vehicle Tax (Ordinance here).

These three items will all be listed on your MVPA.

Time to move out of Cook County! ! !

    A "use" tax?? ? ?

We get taxed when buying it and then taxed when using it? Amazing.....

    Definitely gotta consider this....

Interestingly enough, I think we would be forced to pay the use tax even if we didn't plan on using the car.

    Thanks.

I've heard of the Use Tax, but I had also heard that it was loosely enforced. I guess not. Shameful that it exists. What's another grand? :cursing:

I assume this is enforced based on your own MVPA (or others) or word directly from Tesla?

My MVPA lists the 1% Use Tax as "Cook County Additional Tax," but yes, unfortunately, it is there.

I suppose it could be worse. In my original calculations, I was using a tax rate of 9.25%. This is what sales tax we have locally. So, 7.25% + 1% is a little nicer. I also found this nice little tax app on the web.

Yes, that is the same link as in my original post above...
I am also in the same boat: 7.25% + 1.00%.

It's worse than that in Chicago

There's also a "home rule" tax in Chicago of 1.25% so the total for Chicago is 9.5% (7.25% state + 1.25% City + 1.0% county use) PLUS a flat $15 fee

The state tax is only 6.25% -- that's all I had to pay down here in Clinton County.
