New Center Console notice email

OP has first dibs, but if for whatever reason it doesn't work out, we can make something happen. We will all have to figure out what the timeline will be first and if it really does have rear-cupholder or if that was a typo. And I wouldn't mind input on turning the existing console tower into a center armrest with cupholders for the back seats.

I posted this on the other thread. I cancelled my center console on Friday when I saw that there was a new one without the piano black. Only 2 hours later, I received this email. I called them today and reactivated the original order for the previous version. I am not willing to spend $1250 ($1362 with tax!!!) just to get a slightly better console.

First time post for me. I've ordered a 90D, it's arrived in Dallas and I plan to pick it up this weekend from Tulsa.

I received the e-mail from Tesla, so I wrote them back with several questions, and just received this reply:

"Hi Brute,

Thank you for contacting Tesla Motors. Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, we do not have additional photos of the Model S Integrated Console to provide at this time. Unlike the Premium Front Console which was a drop-in unit that filled the void between the front seats, the new Integrated Console is an entirely new center assembly that will also replace the existing center armrest (your current leather trim and décor from the center armrest will be reused). Additionally, the Integrated Console has an improved sliding cover and features retractable rear cup holders in the rear of the cover storage armrest which can be accessed by rear seat passengers. The Integrated Console will still retain the front passenger cup holders and storage dividers like the original Premium Front Console. The new integrated console will include a flip-up lid with rubber grips and a pass-through to allow the installation of a phone dock kit (purchased separately).

Tesla believes in rolling updates and making the best features available to customers as soon as they are available, rather than waiting to introduce them in a new production year. This is why a new, integrated console is now included in Model S vehicles, but to enable all of our customers to be able to have the integrated console, we offer it as an aftermarket accessory.

We hope this information helps. If you would like to proceed with the Integrated Console, your original Premium Front Console order will be refunded and payment for the Integrated Console will occur at your Service Center following the installation. If you would prefer to keep your existing order, we will process it as soon as possible and your Service Center will contact you to arrange the installation once it has been received.

The standard warranty for aftermarket accessories is one year.

We apologize that we are currently unable to provide timing estimates. Please let us know how you would like to proceed.

Best,

[Tesla Specialist name removed.]

Hello Brutewolf! Welcome to the community and congrats on your new Tesla. What a great first post contribution! This is what was suspected by a few people here and you just confirmed it. I now see why is costs so much. However, the net gain is still just a center console and rear cup holders.

I can see the advantages of the center console, but I really love my negative space. It just makes the car feel roomier and also is a nice poke at the idiocy of the transmission tunnel in ICE cars.

I prefer it too. I like being able to reconfigure what I put in that generous space to fit my current purpose.

It would be great to be able to delete the center console or better yet, pay extra to have it as a reasonably easy snap-in removable feature.

Sadly, after comparing your photos to the Model X console it doesn't look like there are any rear cupholders or USB plugs in the NEW integrated Model S center console.

But it's still a BIG step up from the original accessory console.

The description being sent out by Tesla is pretty clear that some version of the console is going to have those rear cup holders. The fact that the console pictured doesn't have them is in not something to draw conclusions from.

And as for the new version being "a BIG step up from the original" version, that really depends on your perspective, and your car's trim. If you had the piano black trim in your car, the older version actually was a nice match for your interior. The new version is lacking that piece of piano black, and instead the console is all the same material. This makes sense, and is a much better match for anyone with a carbon fiber, obeche matte, or obeche gloss interior. But the original console with its piano black piece looked very nice with piano black interiors.

I believe the only other improvement, aside from the rear cupholders, which you were not including, is that the sliding part supposedly slides a little more easily.

In exchange for that, people have to pay extra for the phone dock.

Put together, I really would not categorize this as a "BIG step up."

Picked up my 90D today. It came with the new center console which is pretty cool. I see no rear seat accessible cup holders anywhere.

Here's what I got - 2 USB ports in the usual spot, but no phone charging HW to be found. Oh wait, what this? 2 little bags in the front compartment under the cup holders....it's phone charging HW! I almost missed this, and I bet others have also.

Basically you get a little cable to plug into one of the USB Ports. This then runs under the lower plastic of the adjacent compartment and up into the 2nd provided piece, which is an iPhone dock. I haven't installed either, and honestly it almost seams like they forgot to install it. Maybe this was intentional, I don't know how easy or hard it will be until I try.

^^ What AndyW2100 said, with 1 more addition. Even if you had carbon fiber interior, you could easily sticker match the plastic portion (yeah I know, not real but not a biggie). Or just leave it as piano black for that little part. Not a biggie.

IMO $1250 for center console (what should be part of the car - and guess what, going forward it is) - is . .quite pricey. It was pricey at 650, at 1250 it's hmm .. well you could get a new laptop for that much .. or ipad pro .. new iphone with $left .. its a lot!

See this old thread I started:

Modifying the Tesla Center Console for phones in cases (Pictures Included)

It should help you connect the dock, which should be quite simple. I imagine the parts haven't changed much, if at all.

Hopefully you won't have to utilize the toothpick trick described in the thread above, and Tesla will have made the adjustment for that on their own.

Also note that in the past that cable was long enough to run to the 12V port, so if you didn't want to give up a USB port, or if you wanted to charge faster, you could get a low-profile 12V USB charger, and charge from there.

For the low low cost of $1250.00 you can add the premium integrated console for your rear cup holders.
