New Delivery - Bad Paint Job - Opinions

This site may earn commission on affiliate links.
Re-spray will never match a proper quality factory paint job. In the factory:

-Perfect untouched surfaces, no prep needed

-Frame is bare, nothing to mask or cover, nothing to block access

-Factory paint, controlled environment, perfect robots

If this car is re-sprayed it will always be inferior, snap decision to reject and ask for a new car. Tesla are continuing with self inflicted wounds (insult their best customers) in a what appears to be a desperate attempt to prop up the share price.

Obviously many body shop paint jobs can exceed the quality of Tesla's factory paint job, as they are producing them now. The best paint jobs in the world are done in body shops, not mass production factories. Remember the beautiful reveal Model 3's...all hand painted.

Thanks boiler81. I emailed & spoke to the delivery specialist that assisted me and he said I can't reject the car, since three days would have been yesterday (I picked up Friday afternoon), but they will do whatever it takes to make sure the paint is OEM or better. I asked about the the paint warranty & if it would show up on any vehicle report like Carfax or AutoCheck and he said they will honor the paint fully like Tesla would and that it wouldn't show up on any vehicle reports, since the fix is considered in house. You can't really tell the paint is bad outside of direct light on it. But yeah...no bueno.

I agree with you and I honestly was surprised. I feel like a fool. I went in with low expectations, because of all the problems I've read, so it was like let's just take one for the team...bs stupid mentality. I did tweet Elon & Tesla if they could have someone contact me, so I could send them the pics. Obviously, posting them on twitter could end up going viral fast. Even though, they "the shorts", could do it now if they found this thread.
Will say had 3 delivery in March and after a month or so noticed paint chipping off around bumper near hood and headlight and shared on here. I found several other cars had same paint defect...they had car for 2 weeks and repainted entire bumper and there is no way you can tell, that being said if they repaint the entire car which I hope they promised you I really don't think it will be an issue. Just remember when you get it back you may want to wait couple weeks for waxing or ceramic or whatever so the fresh paint can completely cure. I really feel bad for you not being able to experience the car after waiting so long!

LoL all those maybe true for other manufactures. But not tesla.

Have you seen the dust that’s under the clear coats. The blotchy-ness of the paints.

Forget it. A proper paint shop can do a better job than “factory”

It is a shame good old Earl is out of business.

This is the first I've heard of anyone getting compensated for delivery problems. People have rejected cars and had to wait longer, but I don't remember reading previously about people getting store credit or wall chargers for their troubles. It's interesting that some delivery centers are doing that. Probably allowed to pull out all the stops for the end of the quarter rush.

Dammmm...and this is the model right underneath the performance version. You guys got some money to burn, wish it was me, to take a 70k-80k with obvious paint defects. Can't believe car pass Tesla's inspection. Hope mine will be ok. Good luck OP. Show us picks of that new paint job.

I am surprised they aren't just reassigning a new vin...

That's not going to be cheap to do a full repaint...

Good news is you probably will get better paint than factory which is obviously pretty crappy as a lot of us are looking at our fish eyes and dust nibs...

Well that sucks.

On the bright side you could probably push for a full repaint in any color you want. Not too many custom color 3's on the road. Was black what you really wanted?

Hope you can find a remedy that you are happy with so you can get on with enjoying your new ride.

I have been closely watching the thread dealing with red paint issues. This is the first I have seen dealing with black.

I love the overall design, size, performance, handling, comfort, mechanical components and technical aspects of the Tesla 3, but the paint (the most important first impression following the overall beauty of the design) is really distressing.
There does not appear to be any QC.

Every other manufacturer markets beautifully painted vehicles. It's not a new technology that needs to be worked out.

Perhaps Tesla should sell a lower priced primed vehicle, and let the owner arrange for a quality paint job at a local vendor.
(I'm not serious about that, but I attended a car show this past weekend, and there were numerous absolutely beautifully painted cars on display.)

I have a feeling that you'll end up with a beautiful paint job when this is done. There is another thread where someone with a red M3 has to have a complete repaint too. He mentioned the body shop assured him that it would look awesome when done (and it's very expensive). You may end up very happy in the end. Just make sure you get a Tesla loaner while it's in the shop for 3 weeks. It's the least they can do.
