Took delivery tonight. (I'm the even more devastatingly handsome one.)

It's a pretty awesome car! I love it! For me, and maybe for my wife. But... not at all sure I'd recommend it beyond the early adopter crowd. The car has good bones but the way Tesla has centralized everything into a complicated, cluttered single screen while eliminating much of the tactile controls that everyone in the world already understands how to operate... so cool... but IMHO an impediment to many regular people who don't care about being early EV adopters.

Little humor, here. My car was delivered with only 2 miles on the odometer. Pretty darned good for a vehicle apparently built at the end of 2017 and then moved across the country to the Rockville, MD service center!

I drove it home tonight, about 14 miles from the service center to my driveway.

I took this picture when I arrived home:

Years from now, I'm gonna have one ultra-desirable, ultra-low mileage car!

So are you going ahead with your plan for tomorrow?

This is exactly my concern.

Similar to you, my family and I are flying down to Florida tomorrow to take delivery and then surprise my mother with a red Model 3. She has marveled over my Model S but it may be quite different when the Model 3 is her car that she is driving everyday. Excited to see how this works ok.

Good luck with your reveal Alan.

Unfortunately, this is probably going to keep us from being a 2 Tesla family. Mrs. TGA is blind in one eye and has no depth perception, so touch screens are almost impossible for her - she just pokes at thin air without being able to tell how far away the screen actually is.

We may wind up with a Outlander PHEV or whatever PHEV Subaru comes out with this year (her roundtrip commute is ~5 miles, so EV range isn't an issue).

Voice command technology can't advance fast enough to help compensate for touch screen issues.

Delivery in Dedham next week 1 day after my birthday! Thanks for the present, Tesla!

Yours and mine must be coming on the same truck!

I'm a current owner and ordered about 12 minutes after the Hingham, MA store opened on March 31. Delivery Specialist said I was the first delivery in my area, but that's obviously not really accurate if there are multiple 3's on the truck. Just means I probably have a lower VIN.

DS went home sick today so not sure if I'll be able to pick up before early next week since trade and loan aren't showing as completed online yet. :( Can barely stand the wait...

Geeze, can you guys believe this is finally really happening? The years of talk about a mass market Tesla, then the long wait to even make a reservation, and another two years and we're finally taking deliveries. Sooo exciting!!!

Did anyone ever figure out what the "something special" was for the people who stood in line? Was it the lithograph? Lots of people in this forum who didn't wait in line said they got the lithograph, too. What-e-vah.

I can almost assure you, that ship has sailed. How would Tesla know who stood in line versus someone who just walked up later in the day and reserved a car? Tesla, and every store and employee would have need to know, in advance, mind you, to record the exact moment the line "ended" and communicate that back to corporate to give away a gift they didn't even know about. And then what about people who claimed they stood in line and didn't get "something special"? It's an organizational nightmare. Tesla has much more important things to worry about.

The lithograph was the "something special" sent to everyone who reserved inside of some time period (one day, two days, one week, who knows?).

Tomorrow's the day! I should be more excited...but...it's our third Tesla (and fifth BEV), been there done that? Just not feeling it yet. I will be glad to retire the i3, which can barely get me home in the winter. Still a great ride, and I feel kinda odd replacing a perfectly good car. I'm sure I'll get over it with a few good stomps of the 'go' pedal.

Anyone wanna buy an i3?

All is well... whew! Parents freaked... it was a roller-coaster there for a while yesterday morning... everyone has calmed down... 1 month trial period, if for any reason it's not working out, I'll take it back from them.

Watching them try to learn M3 made me appreciate how painful the UI is for ordinary people. I've ranted about this elsewhere. But one big thing with S/X: TWO screens makes a HUGE difference in de-cluttering the UI.

We've had the "full early adopter Tesla experience". :) Overwhelming confusion, things that work differently apparently just to be different, loving some things, scratching our heads over others. Our first interaction with Tesla service over the phone, when an error message came up yesterday. First firmware download overnight. First interaction on-site with the Service Center after the error message wouldn't go away. Phone integration via Bluetooth. Keycards. And so on.

And... the parents seem pretty happy! I've gone from pessimistic to optimistic that this will work!

Thank you, all, for the kind words and support.

Alan

P.S. I am loving the M3 and anxious to get my own later this summer. Even if the UI frustrates me. :) Overall, the positives vastly outweigh the negatives.

P.P.S. Kid teaching his grandfather about how Teslas work. Wow!

Took delivery this morning with my father, wife and daughter. The car is simply spectacular. Much better than I expected. We were all really impressed with how the car rides and I don't think the UI and off center speed is an issue at all.

Revealed the surprise to my mother and she was thrilled. Has quickly taken to the silence of the electric motor and single peddle driving with regen. Not surprisingly, she is a bit overwhelmed by all the car can do but is really up for learning how everything works.

This car is a homerun!

Great news, Alan! I’m hoping that some of the odder parts of the UI will be addressed using voice, steering wheel buttons, and just better structure. Of course that will happen in a series of OTA updates just when they get used to doing it the current way...

You and Shelbri are brave. I spend enough time doing remote computer support for my mother, I don’t want to have to do it for her car as well!

100% agree, I realized the other day my parents would have no idea how to use the model 3. They can barely manage using their iphones

Hi, @SureValla

After watching my parents absorb Model 3 for the past few days, I have started to think that the issue is more about previous computer experience and commitment/excitement to working through the Model 3 UI. Both of my parents have been using computers since the 1990s, specifically Macs. So they already have familiarity with a UI, with the quirks of various apps that may be less well-behaved or more cluttered than others. My mother also *does* have experience with an iPhone but my father does not. Once the shock passed, they were very excited about the Model 3 and have thrown themselves into reading the manual (Dad) and watching YouTube videos about it (Mom). They are coming from a 14-year old VW wagon of some kind -- a Golf-ish kind of wagon, maybe? -- so a pretty big change.

In short: it's probably as much or more about attitude as it is prior experience. Well, and basic decent/good health sufficient to operate a vehicle.

totally agree, attitude makes a huge difference. My parents tend to give up and get frustrated with technology very quickly even though they are very smart people.
