New EV charger rules stress Made In America, force Tesla changes

Feb 15 (Reuters) - The Biden administration on Wednesday issued long-awaited final rules on its national electric vehicle charger network that require the chargers to be built in the United States immediately, and with 55% of their cost coming from U.S.-made components by 2024.

The Biden administration hopes the new rules, issued after nearly eight months of debate, will jump-start the biggest transformation of the U.S. driving landscape in generations. It seeks to give consumers unfettered access to a growing coast-to-coast network of EV charging stations, including Tesla Inc's (TSLA.O) SuperChargers.

Companies that hope to tap $7.5 billion in federal funding for this network must also adopt the dominant U.S. standard for charging connectors, known as "Combined Charging System" or CCS, and use standardized payment options that are smartphone-friendly.

Amazes me that we thing the government is the experts on what plug to use. It's already been determine by experts that the

North American Charging Standard

is the way to go.

Keep this up and non tesla charging will be so wacked it won't be funny. Look at how fudded up the CCS charging system already is with the 2 billion that was to be spent on restitution by Volkswagen. Just because the government throws around money doesn't mean there will be solid solutions.

Tesla's transition to CCS2 in Europe has been smooth, except for the short cable that created chaos for some non-Tesla cars.

China adopted GB/T standard since 2018 and Tesla has adjusted well except I don't hear about the short cable problem over there.

No idea where this statement comes from as Tesla has more ports than all of the other DCFC options combined.

If you go by the number of manufacturers (which now includes Tesla) whose EVs support it, or by the number of charging locations, CCS comes out ahead.

No way does CCS come ahead in NA for superchargers and for superchargers that actually work/perform to expectations. All you have to do is visit other non Tesla EV forums and you can see how much of a train wreck EA chargers and other chargers are. Some don’t work, some don’t deliver the power they are supposed too, etc, etc. It makes it extremely hard to own another EV, except Tesla, especially if you travel. We are extremely fortunate to have the Tesla Supercharging Network.

Isn't the short SuperCharger cable going to cause issues for everyone including Teslas waiting for a space, once non-Teslas can start to use the SCs?

for a non-Tesla with their charging port on the "wrong" side, when they want to plug in at a Tesla SC they may have to park in the adjacent parking stall for the short cable to reach, effectively taking up two spaces. e.g. lets say stalls 2A and 2B are available, but wrong-side-EV has to park in 2B space in order to reach the 2A plug. In such case the nav or app may show more available charging spots than are actually available. That's probably going to make the newcomers to the party even less popular

I've seen mention of this issue in some UK youtube videos once they started allowing non-Teslas to use the SC network there. At least some non-Tesla-EV drivers in Europe are getting creative to not block an extra space when SuperCharging
