So, it may be heresy, but I had a Model 3 reservation that I put in on day 1, and I canceled it about 3 months ago when I purchased a used Nissan Leaf to hold me over. Financially I probably couldn't order a Model 3 with specs high enough to get it in 2017 or even 2018, so I figured I could start saving gas immediately. I will likely put in a Model 3 reservation again sometime in 2017 before the final reveal, so I likely won't get my Model 3 until 2019 if not later, depending on how fast production ramps up. (Hopefully very fast!)
I'm in Arkansas, I've seen a total of three Tesla vehicles out here, including my first witnessing a Model X a few weeks ago, waving enthusiastically at the owner from my Leaf. My hope is when my wife and I get our Model 3 that we can ditch having any ICE vehicles. By the time 2018 or 2019 rolls around, we should have enough saved up for the M3 to where our payments will be reasonable for our relatively modest income. (IT jobs here don't pay nearly as well as they do in California. I'm sure I could make an extra 40-50% in any state but Arkansas.)
