We are working on a Tesla Roadster 4.0 Battery developement. It will be same design as original with 11 sheets and 99 bricks. We will use Model S cells which have 30-45%* more capacity then 2.x Roadster.
There will be also 4.0 lite option with same capacity as Roadster 2.x and 25% less weight - good for all wanting to accelerate even faster and have better handling and better weight distribution.
We expect that first pack will be ready for sale in Q3 2021. Price is not known yet.
I will post soon some photos of our work.

They would probably have to ballast the battery weight up to the original weight or do a lot of re-tuning of the suspension. My understanding is that the Roadster is very finely tuned for the exact mass and type of tires. Any changes could be unstable.
That would apply only to the Lotus. Tesla adding 1000 pounds towards the rear of the car obliterated any tuning made.

a passenger could cause a more than 200lb difference
True, but 200 lbs + an additional 200 lbs (or more in my case) is 400+ lbs different. 200 lbs, in a 2700 lb car is significant. I can definitely tell the handling difference when I'm alone and when I'm with my father. Both of us are well north of 200 lbs.
There isn't much shoulder room either.
My information comes from discussions with Tesla suspension engineers many years ago when there were discussions about reducing the number of batteries to improve performance.
There are stories about original Roadster owners who bought cheap tires, then got sideways and wrecked their cars because the cars became unstable.

What do cheap tires have to do with the topic? In any case if your are looking for the bleeding edge of performance then you'd need to fine tune your suspension to your specific setup. A 200lb lighter pack won't necessarily be an issue, certainly less of a difference than the offset weight of a 200+lb passenger vs driver only.

Agreed... cheap tires are a whole nother conversation.

If you are talking about losing 200# over a single corner, I can see that. But, 200# somewhat centrally located is not a big deal. If it were that sensitive, we would be measuring using corner scales and doing it with the actual driver in the seat.
