New Supercharger locations in 2017, WA

But the WA-530/I5 interchange, the most common route to get from I5 to "downtown" Arlington, isn't included within city limits. Odd.

I included both map links because there are differences between them, notably that the Bing map shows the city boundary to include property just east of that very interchange.

Looking on Arlington's own website, I found this zoning map, which is slightly different than the Bing map, and is dated 12/12/2016.

I drove around Arlington the other day. Putting one right in that town would definitely be goofy. It's quite a diversion off I-5. The Arlington freeway exit has some gas stations, a Denny's and a crappy motel but doesn't really seem worthy of a supercharger location unless they are desperate which they shouldn't be in this area.

I'm thinking maybe they are going to put one in at the Smokey Point exit which isn't technical its own town, but rather split up between Marysville and Arlington addresses. The best spot would be somewhere near the Red Robin. I'm not sure if that area is a Marysville or Arlington address.

One other decent possibility in the area would be the "Seattle" Premium Outlets which are nowhere near Seattle, but actually near Tulalip casino. There are already 3 level 2 chargers and one of the NRG EVGo CCS/Chademo combo chargers at the outlets and they would have plenty of space for a supercharger in the surface parking lot. That being said, that location is for sure not an Arlington address so maybe that isn't on their radar.

EDIT: I just looked and the west side of I-5 at Smokey Point is a Marysville address while the east side is an Arlington address. Somewhere near the Best Western Plus, McDonald's, Starbucks on the Arlington side wouldn't be the worst place for a Supercharger.
Rumor: I was talking to another owner at the Monroe SC and they said they saw construction has started on a new SC in the Marysville area. I don't remember the name, but I thought they said it was at a "new" casino. Anyway, anybody out that way might want to scout out the area from 88th St NE north to highway 530 along I-5. My guess would be at 172nd St NE highway 531. The Target or Best Buy lot should have lots of parking since everyone is buying on-line these days.

I'll check it out later tonight. I'm up there almost every day. The "new" casino clue is a little confusing because the Tulalip tribe has one casino in Marysville proper that is 20-30 years old and a bigger casino with a hotel, spa, etc. one exit north that is 14 years old. However, I heard the older one is going to expand and I believe maybe construction has already started. I really hope it's not at the older casino as that place is tweaker central. Plenty of tweakers late at night at the new casino too but at least the facility is nice and there is a security presence.

Strangely neither casino has anything in terms of EV charging so I'm skeptical that they would all of the sudden host a supercharger. Adjacent to the newer casino is an outlet mall that does have FREE level 2 and pay level 3 charging from EVGo.

There is another casino called Angel of the Winds about 10 miles to the northeast that surprisingly has Tesla destination chargers, but it would not be a good location for a supercharger in my opinion because it is a smaller property and a few miles off of I-5. It does however have an Arlington address and the "Coming Soon" supercharger map does say one is going in in Arlington.

Lastly, I agree with you that the Smokey Point exit is a decent possibility, but there is no casino there. For what it's worth, the east side of the freeway at that exit has Arlington addresses and the west side has Marysville addresses.

Now I'm extra curious too, especially about Angel of the Winds. They were new Tesla owners, but they shouldn't have mistaken destination chargers for a supercharger. Expansion at the older casino might make sense. Hmmm.....

Now that we've seen another supercharger placed at a casino, I'm starting to feel more confident that the "Snoqualmie" supercharger will go in at the casino up there. The casino is very close to I-90 while the actual town of Snoqualmie is a significant diversion. Unlike Angel of the Winds, Snoqualmie casino does not have destination chargers, but they have had FREE level 2 charging for at least 4 years now. And they don't just have one or two of them, they have 8! So I consider them to be a highly EV-friendly business. That combined with the "Snoqualmie" pin on the Tesla map, and the nice location of the casino have me thinking that it is fairly likely a supercharger will go in there. I will sweep the parking lot looking for signs of construction and/or ask the valet guys if they have heard anything, next time I am up there, which will be tomorrow night. It would seem the Snoqualmie supercharger would be a fairly high priority since Centralia to Ellensburg is such a tough stretch in anything less than an 85. In certain conditions, it could even be challenging for an 85 or 90. I would think they for sure would want to get that one up and running before the 3s hit the road.

As far as Lynnwood is concerned, I have heard some people here on the forum say that getting on and off the freeway there during the day is a nightmare due to the traffic. Even though I live nearby, I am rarely up that way during high traffic hours so I am less familiar with the situation. It still seems like Alderwood Mall is a likely suspect just due to it being so close to the intersection of I-5 and I-405. Another likely candidate in my opinion is the Fred Meyer which is just to the southwest of the mall. I will to do some reconnaissance of those two locations next time I pass through the area which should be soon.

Seattle and Bellevue are anybody's guess. I guess they could maybe end up being service center superchargers, although I don't really think the Seattle service center is an appropriate location (I know some others here have disagreed with me on this).

Guessing Tesla is paying very little or nothing for these. While I personally love the Angel of the Winds (what a name lol) location given I live in Skagit off Chuckanut Drive, it does not make a lot of sense to me that Tesla would pick this location given how close the Burlington SC is and given how rural Angel of the Winds is. Maybe Burlington is too far from Centralia for some models (and they want drivers to be able to skip Seattle)? Or maybe it is costing Tesla next to nothing for these.

While out looking, swing by Fred Meyer's at the Lake Sammamish Center. FM is known to be EV friendly (SCs or Chademos at several locations). I think FM would be a better location since westbound traffic cannot exit at the casino. As for Lynnwood, I agree that the mall or FM would be best, but another possibility is the Hampton or Holiday Inn's at 196th W. Again hotels known to be EV friendly. Folks in the south Seattle area, those going to Mnt. Rainier, and those traversing Seattle via 167 or 405 would benefit from one at FM, 801 Auburn Way N in Auburn. I don't think it's on Tesla's map, but I'm hoping they see the light on that one.

I checked all likely Lynnwood locations last night and didn't find any signs of construction. The Hampton Inn appears to be way too crowded to squeeze a supercharger in there. The Holiday Inn Express has a little more space but would still be a tight squeeze. Also there's less to do in the immediate vicinity there. There would be many decent spots on the edge of the Alderwood Mall parking lot (there are also a couple garages), but others have mentioned that traffic can be a nightmare there. Both Fred Meyers have space for a supercharger, but there is not a whole lot to do near the location on 196th St. (other than the stuff that the Fred Meyer itself has to offer of course). It's also not terribly conveniently located.

If I had to choose a spot in Lynnwood, I would absolutely want the supercharger to go in at the Fred Meyer on 164th St. Of course there are the usual Fred Meyer amenities but there are also a ton of eateries on the north side of the parking lot. Starbucks, MOD Pizza, Five Guys, Subway, a Thai restaurant, frozen yogurt place, sushi place, and an alehouse. I just looked right at google maps right now and in the middle of a Monday rush hour, it takes only 5-6 minutes to drive the 1.5 miles to I-5 (north or south) and just 3 minutes to get on I-405. So this site appears to be a winner. Hopefully they can or have already made the deal with the property owner and management.

I think we can gather some clues from the Angel of the Winds supercharger, which help us to better read the tea leaves of the Tesla supercharger map. When they recently announced the superchargers that would be built soon, some of the locations, such as Arlington and to a lesser extent, Lynnwood and Snoqualmie, were head scratchers. I think the reason these locations were listed is because they already had deals in place with property owners in those cities (or at least places that have those cities listed in their addresses). It seems pretty clear that that must have been the case with Angel of the Winds because it is already nearly complete and that map was released only a couple months ago.

If they were just planning out general places where they wanted to put a supercharger, they most certainly wouldn't have picked Arlington, and they might have used Port Angeles instead of Sequim or North Bend instead of Snoqualmie. Lynnwood is also a fairly specific location, when they could have picked any of the cities near the I-5/I-405 interchange. Of course we know they already have a supercharger under construction in Sequim, so that is yet another clue. So my guess is they already have deals in place for Snoqualmie and probably Lynnwood. Like I said earlier, I think the Snoqualmie Casino is a likely location. And my previous post provides some likely locations for Lynnwood.

I asked the City of Forks if there's any permits in progress in their area. I figured that they would probably know even if things are being considered even outside of the city. I got a very nice letter back basically saying that there is nothing currently going on. However, they have presented to the a citizens group, WSDOT, and a private-commercial consortium for a universal charging station.

But, when I looked on the Telsa Motors site, a new destination charger has appeared, and the details on the Forks Supercharger is blank. The Quillayute River Resort is approximately 7 miles off Highway 101 and has a Forks address. There's two destination Tesla chargers, according to the Tesla info at 16kW.

So, I wonder if things are being reconsidered there? I think it would be really iffy to make it to Sequim from Aberdeen in a MS70D. There would certainly be no side trips!

I think they will definitely put one in the Forks area eventually. There is really no other option in that area. However, the map said that construction would begin in 2017 for most of the WA superchargers, but the Forks supercharger just said it would be some time in the future. So reading the tea leaves, I am guessing that they had no deal in place in Forks, but just a general idea that they need to put a supercharger in that area at some point in the future.

As for Superchargers at Fred Meyers, I'm glad they have a bit of a partnership going, but I wish they would pursue other (better?) options very close by.

We were in Kennewick today and had to drive past a really great looking area with a Bob's Burger, The Rock Wood Fired Pizza, Hop Jack, and Fredy's Stake House only to park at the Fred Meyer and have to walk across the parking lot to the Azteca as that and the Deli in Fred Meyer are the only options. Pretty lame if you ask me when that intersection has so many more appealing choices AND it's 2.5 miles closer to I-82.

drove around olympic/islands last month, charged at nema 14-50 in port angeles and friday harbor, and in forks at destination charger at river hotel..then in aberdeen. Amazing first road trip with all 3 kids in Tesla. Hit Glacier last weekend... looking like the infrastructure will be developing quickly! Check out the star wars momorobelia shop across from the supercharger there in aberdeen... sweet time killer, but i think he is selling it soon.

I think most everyone would agree with you on that one. Kennewick has been one of my least favorite locations when it comes to food. Fortunately, it's never ICEd or full, plus I rarely charge there.

I can see how it's not what everybody is looking for; but I love going to Fred Meyer's for food. They have a WHOLE GROCERY STORE in there; you can get whatever you want. Well, OK, as long as it doesn't need cooking or has already been prepared.

Then just carry it over to the patio furniture section to eat it.

Long hours, restrooms, wifi...and if you forgot anything for your trip, chances are they have it. It's a near-perfect stop! (Well, I do wish the restrooms were accessible 24 hours for those late-night trips...)
