New Tesla Owner - Model X Delivery & Post ownership experience of 5 days

The day finally arrived after ~2 months of waiting. Pulled the trigger on a X 100D on 1/31 and took delivery 3/28. Here are some of my thoughts for to-be owners, rants, and praises.

After placing order the delivery specialist (in Fremont) contacted me and kept good communication throughout the wait until the MX went into production. There were slight delays and re-scheduling over the weekend since the car wasn't ready yet so we pushed it out to the following week and settled on Wed 6:15PM. Wife, toddler, and I took off work early and arrived early at 6PM.

Waited.... and waited.. and waited... Finally at almost 9PM, around 3 hours later, we finally got to see the X. Needlessly to say wife and kid were hungry, cranky, and frankly just wanted to leave before seeing the car. Starting inspecting the car and found major hood misalignment which they took care of on the spot. I did notice the front bumper and side fender were also not flush / very noticeable step which I wanted to bring up but by that time wife was pissed so... just let it go. *sigh*

After 5 days of ownership I did notice some issues that I want to take back for repair.
1) Driver side seat crease - Basically pretty severe pinching / crease on the driver seat. Wished I noticed this in their dark showroom?

2) Left blinker stalk - Plastic feels loose and always has a clicking feeling whenever you use it for signaling, etc...

3) Front passenger side window - Loud squeak when you roll up/down

4) Front bumper / side fender step -- Not flush

So yeah. Many people say that Tesla quality improved. That the people who took delivery with issues and what not are only the people who post online. I really wanted to believe that and hoped I would get a near perfect Model X but such is reality.

At the end of the day, like many other people say, its not the end of the world. Its still a dream to drive compared to my Audi Q5. I just dropped the X off for a full XPEL custom wrap + CQuartz finest reserve coating. So hopefully should get it back by end of next week.

By the way, for people who took delivery recently, did you get key fobs in a Tesla box? Mine was just 2 fobs by themselves on the dash..

We too took delivery of MX 100D last week.

MX fobs come by themselves. So we kept leather fob ring holders from our old MS.

As for QA/QC, not much has changed from 2015 MS we had or 2018 Model 3 delivery we took in 2/2018.

2018 Model 3 has multiple unresolved issues with front hood alignment, bulging front lamp housing, and interior leatherette.

As for a new 2018 MX 100D,

#1. Passenger FWD did not aligned properly. This was noted during delivery for future repair.

#2. Paint scratch in passenger rear quarter panel. This was noted and buffed out at the delivery center.

#2. Something is loose in the driver door and it is rolling around.

#3. Front passenger door creaks constantly from poor fitting.

We have appointment to service tomorrow.

As buyers of multiple Tesla vehicles, we support Tesla and believe in their mission. But constant poor QA/QC problems on every single Tesla we purchased are eroding our confidence if Tesla can actually be a main stream high volume auto manufacturer.

Probably not as relevant, but Saturday I refused delivery of an inventory vehicle. It had 4000 miles on it and came with a good price adjustment. I was ready to accept imperfections knowing I am getting a discount, but when I inspected the car I just couldn’t accept it.

- I took delivery at Marina Del Rey delivery center and was very unimpressed. My DS was a young women who knew less about Tesla than I did. She was annoyed when I pulled out my check list and wouldn’t leave me alone to inspect the car even for a second. She kept asking me why was I doing this since I already paid for the car (I didn’t).

- The car was not prepped for delivery at all. They just washed it. Still had dried up coke in the cup holder. Dirty fingerprints on the lower dash. Curb rash on both front wheels. Driver’s seat was so creased and dirty it looked like car had 70,000 miles on it.

- upper panels above the front windows were misaligned by about 1/2 inch. It was so aymmetric on both sides it looked like the car was in an accident.

- gaps between sides of the lower bumper were big enough to stick my pinky in them. And on and on.

When I pointed all this out to my DS, she really didn’t know what to do and said she would call the manager. He came out, also seemed very annoyed. He pretty much said that the service center will try to fix some of the issues but of course there are no guarantees. In the end, I refused delivery.

This was going to be my second model X. I bought my first in 2016 and it was bought back by Tesla this past February for multiple defects and nearly 2 months at the service center. So I lost Tesla lottery twice now. I want another model X, but honestly not sure what to do at this point.

I also just got 2 fobs by themselves, no box no key ring.

When I took delivery back in 2016 I got the nice fob box with key ring and tool to open the fob. I also got swag bag with umbrella, pen, etc. This time there’s nothing at all.

We received our MX 100D on Mar 23rd, and received the beautiful box. Inside were the two key fob and key ring.

The DS feels new at the job though. I just let my wife go through the experience while I figure out the important things like if it came with the new MCU or not. (It did!)

There are good cars coming thru ...I am on my second "X" ..I sold the first one, a 90D to upgrade to the 100D ..Both cars were without any significant problems ..None that I had to take back to the SC...Neither car were Mercedes or even Acura Fit and finish , but Not disappointing ...The tech easily over rode the lack of high quality fits ..Neither car had hideous fits and gaps .
So, luck of the draw ??? However , I likewise would not have accepted a really bad car , not for any money .

If you want the box that came with my fob’s you’re welcome to it...it’s just a paper box and the fob’s don’t fit in it since they put the key-rings on them...so it’s just a big empty box sitting around that cannot fit anything....you’re really not missing anything in my opinion.

I am sorry to hear about your fit and finish challenges - I really don’t know why the last line of defense at theSC’s can’t deal with this stuff before delivery....so much of it is obvious.

Another unexpected surprise was that the quick connection phone dock is no longer included (even with premium package)?

Looks like previously this was included before but I asked and they said they removed this now. So I have to spend almost $40 for it ?

Man. Pay $130K for a new car and doesn't come with phone connectors. o_O

Yea pretty soon they will stop including the mobile connector too I tell you.

Personally I have not found the dock that useful. It’s only for charging and it doesn’t work with most cases unless you modify it. You are better off with a usb cable and someone can continue to use the phone while it charges.

I will also send you mine with the box...you can pay shipping - it's really not worth it.

I put these on my phone & in my X - much easier to work with as they're magnetic and they have held during a Ludicrous Launch!

MagCase for iPhone X

MagMount Qi

I double stick taped the charger in the same slot as the phone dock (the mount comes off easily) and my phone just grabs and starts charging.

Wow!
I imagined that people with a successful lemon law claim in the past get extra attention on the subsequent delivery so it all goes perfect?

Really surprised to hear about a second loss in the the Tesla lottery.

Hi I just received my P100D X on Saturday. The fobs didn't come with a box either but I've seen a lot of youtubers who got it so I was pretty disappointed it didn't come with one. I think the people who are saying it isn't a big deal here are wrong. I'll tell you why:

1. Imagine if you walk into the Apple store and bought an iPhone and they just give you a phone with no box. Is that a big deal? I'm sure would would say so for a phone that costs ~$1k, which in my case is $159k less that my car.

2. The box comes with 2 keyrings made specifically for your key. Sure you can go and buy them on Amazon for $5.99. But why? I just paid $160k for a car and now the key hangs alone in my pocket unattached to my keyring until I order something online and it gets delivered.

3. Presentation. Its quite a different feel when you walk up a nicely packaged box on the table as apposed to some keys just thrown on a table. If they are going to get cheap on giving you a box and keychains then they should at least have a really nice reusable box that they can open per customer or something.

Anyways, I was bummed about not having the box and the person who showed me the car went out of his way and found me one. They have extra stashed somewhere but are just not producing anymore.

Am I still disappointed? A little, yes. My car came with a misaligned falcon wing, scratch on the hood, rip on the rear passenger seat, a 4 inch pen mark on the drivers passenger seat, fingerprints on the mcu, car was still in test mode when i drove it off the lot, and a long list of other issues.

Yes I still love the car and I'm happy to own it but quality control is certainly not there.

I'm not defending the amateur hour antics of the Tesla delivery team but to keep things in perspective:

1 - Practically all the DS people are millennial's and younger. I see poor performance across the board in all sectors and all roles at all companies. None of us here would deliver stuff to other Tesla owners the way they were delivered to us.
2 - Tesla already burns $8,000 per minute. They can get better staff if they are willing to burn $9,000/min.
3 - You cannot walk down the street and buy the identical Faraday Future car and get a Tesla except with better service. We all know this.
4 - Nobody is happy (all the time) but some of us know that Tesla WILL make things right. Even if it takes additional trips.. grrr
5 - Too bad Musk can't clone himself 30,000 times and take over every job at Tesla. He'd do great I'm sure.

The re-purchase is a complete separated transaction. No one acknowledges it’s my second / replacement Tesla on the replacement buying / delivery process. The only overlap is that Tesla lets me keep the old car until the new one arrives. Now that I got the new one I wonder how long it will take them to get the old car.

Congrats on your new X! Had mine delivered a few short weeks ago, and the fobs did come in that box. I would get some of those remaining issues taken care of, you put good money into this vehicle. Of course no one expects perfect but there should be absolutely no squeaks!

Interesting experience. I too picked up an inventory X on Saturday from MDR. I had driven for 4 hours to get there, and dropped my rental off already, so I had much less flexibility to walk away. Mine had some paint damage on the front bumper and smaller scratch and chip in the rear. None of this was disclosed before of course. It also was missing one fob, and the other was scratched. I was told it's as-is, but since it was a lease I was a little less concerned. The paint really annoys me, but it wasn't obvious if I wasn't looking for it. My OA is getting me replacement keys, so that will be addressed. In the end, the savings was substantial enough that I went through with it, but it did put me off a little.

For what it's worth, I did get the box, but it really isn't anything to get excited about. I agree it adds to the feel, but since they were delivering several hundred cars that day it all felt like an assembly line anyway. The box didn't change that for me.
