Then there shouldnt be a 240 socket already in the garage.

If there's already a socket in the garage then there's a 99% chance it's a NEMA 10-30 or 14-30 intended to be used with an electric clothes dryer (240V/30A). It's already been accounted for in the existing panel. You were talking about adding an additional circuit *on top* of this.

Contractor will do a load evaluation to determine proper current available.

Your electrical box may have circuits installed that you are not using. Perhaps a circuit for electric stove, clothes dryer etc, that you are not using because you have hooked them up to gas. This will allow more current for EV.

No, I wasnt, nor was @Rocky_H Neither one of us was talking about using something on top of that.. we were talking about using whatever the existing 240 is and connecting it to the wall connector.

Electrician scheduled to come tomorrow to run 240v, but I don't have Wall Connector yet. First, is there any place to buy it in Los Angeles on a Sunday? Second, can the Connector plug into an outlet or does it need to be hardwired?

Once upon a time you could buy Wall Connectors and things like that at Service Centers. Don't know if any are open on Sunday (I'd suspect not). Or see if someone local to you has one to sell third party here?

Tesla Parts for Sale

Also check Nextdoor, Craigslist, local Facebook Tesla groups?

The Wall Connector needs to be hard-wired. In theory one could attach a pigtail with a plug (and some people have done this) but I'm not sure that's code-compliant.

Bruce.
