New tow hitch cover

I really wish the poster that showed the pop out magnet approach would post his process. I’d love to try to replicate that without having to start from scratch and risk damaging my hitch cover.

I ended up using an old ikea wrench that had a tab on the end. Once I realized I didn’t need to be particularly ginger taking it off. Lame that Tesla doesn’t either provide a tool or make it much easier to remove. The next obstacle is the tow hitch pin and there being super tight space to install it. I ordered a shorter pin with a lock that points out perpendicular (toward you).

I cut all the clips off from the cover except the center upper and lower. Drilled a hole and forced in a rubber plug about the size of a wine cork which sticks out about 3/4" to be used as a handle. The cover is easily removed now by pulling on the plug. Has been there since last fall and survived a Canadian winter. Originally had left 4 retainers in place but even that was a pain. Works amazingly well. Sorry about the bad picture but the car is filthy right now.

There was one solution that I really like involving a cabinet pull and some magnets. I'd link it here but can't find it. I did have a watch on that thread but in this new forum can't find the list of my watched threads. Anyone know how to get to your watched thread list?

Got a May 21 build Y and the hitch cover was pretty easy to remove. There’s a notch on the top side for a flat blade screwdriver. Part number is 1494009-00-C

Thanks for posting and including pics! Of course right after I ordered a hitch cover removal kit for my en-route May 21 build  Guess I can throw that package next to the now unneeded PPF kit that's been sitting in the garage waiting for the Y as well.

I just took delivery of a MYP (June 2021 build) and the tow hitch cover (1494009-00-C) was very easy to remove using a flat screwdriver by just unclipping two of the tabs at the top with minimal pressure, and then using my fingers to pop the cover off. I had purchased the EveryAmp tool in anticipation but it was totally worthless as it was too big to easily slip in between the bumper and cover.
