NHTSA asks about MCU memory screen failures

Good news, it would seem. Tesla have taken responsibility for this "malfunction" and are providing extended warranty support (8 years/100K miles from initial delivery) plus issuing refunds to people who have had to pay out of pocket for this repair.

An update: After 12,523 replacements, Feds investigate Tesla Media Control Unit failures

It sounds like a recall is due since this is a safety issue (it prevents the windscreen being defogged properly). There are also questions about Tesla "encouraging" owners to pay for upgrades that they don't need.

Worryingly in its response to the NHTSA Tesla says that the MCU should last 10 years with moderate use, but for heavy users it could be half that.

“However, Tesla also told NHTSA that "the MCU failures are likely to continue to occur in subject vehicles as vehicles continue to operate and use available memory in the 8GB eMMC NAND flash memory until 100 percent of units have failed."

I remember when this issue first surfaced a few years ago and people argued it wouldn’t be 100% failure rates. Well, here we are apparently straight from the source. At least Tesla is now covering the repairs for longer than the original warranty.
