It doesn't excuse shoddy programming either. There is no excuse for not having authentication on a web service that houses private information.
Nissan just iced this particular cake for me today.
They sent an email saying that the EV-Connect(Carwings) service relies on a 2G cell service that will be discontinued in December this year.
So when they fix this security bug it will only be alive until December anyway. At least they said they would cover a "substantial" portion of the cost to upgrade the 2G radio to a 3G.
At least it confirms that Nissan are just a traditional car company that happens to sell an EV - not that this should be a surprise
