I think a lot of Elon's decision to manufacture as much in-house as possible was so Tesla can maintain, and improve on, product quality. In-house manufacturing also lets Tesla produce modified/enhanced parts almost as soon as the pen dries on the changes. The downside, as rcc and others have mentioned, is that suppliers might not take them seriously or not give them quite as good of a deal on materials since they are still a small company. Hopefully the supply issues will get sorted out by the time Model X is scheduled to begin production.

There's zero downside for Tesla to pulling as much manufacturing as they can in-house.

The suppliers weren't going to Tesla seriously anyway. Small company. Never made a profit. Never produced in volume. Not being taken seriously.

The only way to get a supplier to take them seriously is to get them to build their stuff on Tesla's factory floor. That way, they're close enough that you can pound on them to get them to take you seriously. And it makes it much easier to coordinate changes.

This is what Tesla did with their seats. Another company makes them but Tesla had them set up a small production facility on-site at Tesla.
