I was told today that you don't get a VIN till after production and when the car is just about ready to be loaded into transport. Pretty much that the cars are made, then matched to an order, thats when you get your VIN.
I was told the same last week. She said my car was entering production and that I would get a VIN and delivery specialist assigned once the car is through production and ready to ship.

From a logistics perspective, the easist thing for them to do is to manufacture in batches and then allocate VIN to orders throughout the country. So my feeling is that once you have a VIN, it should be out of production and now they just have to figure out logistics of getting cars to final destinations.

Damn you guys. All of these recent VIN assignments have me refreshing my Tesla account every few minutes to see if I have mine. No dice yet.
To be calm and zen about it, I'm checking every morning, every night, and every time I see somebody either with my specs, or in my area getting a VIN.

That's quite a few times a day, but otherwise I'd be checking too much.

VIN must be assigned during /immediately prior to production as it is embedded in the front fascia and that would be a major job to take out to rivet the tag in the dashboard.
Drivers side info would be placed after /at end of production line.

Sure, the car gets a VIN once it enters production, but with Model 3 the VINS are assigned to people later on as they just produce batches. So for model 3 future owners, once the VIN shows up the car is produced (and matched to the owner).

I don’t believe anyone suggest that a certain car gets VIN after production but that doesn’t mean that the buyer gets a VIN before production. They can produce cars in different colors and give then VIN and then see wish customers that have order the same spec. This is the advantage of having really low number of configuration options, if you don’t count the software that easily could be added afterwards Tesla have less then 20 configuration at this point for Model 3.

Thanks all,
I was replying to "enlombardo " who seemed to think that the VIN is allocated to the car AFTER production.
As most say cars are produced in batches of colour with VIN added as dashboard fascia is installed.
After it comes off the line and passes QA it is then passed to production schedulers who then allocate
as they see fit i.e. early March East Coast and or full trucks etc.
Used to work at Nissan UK factory so pretty sure process is the same.
Car will then be allocated to owner at this stage.
Think of us in UK who will probably not get RHD until 2020 at present rates.

I think I said the opposite. I assumed the VIN was assigned in my account when production of my car is scheduled. I was talking to the manager at my local Tesla store and he told me that once a VIN is assigned the specialist can see when production of the car will be completed and get a delivery date.

So, like this:
Production for a blue w/sport wheels is scheduled and a VIN is assigned to the vehicle.
Matched to my order and VIN appears in my account.
Car is manufactured with the VIN and delivered to me.

With that said it was an assumption based on a conversation with someone in a Tesla store and we know how reliable that information is.
