Called the service center again and they created a ticket and scheduled a mobile tech to come and fix it.

So I have an appointment tomorrow morning (9/13) at the service center that is an hour away and I am supposed to drive this car without power steering. I am not looking forward to that drive.
Why did you have to drive the car to a service center if they were sending a tech to you?

No car with only 500 miles should have this many recurring issues.

The problem here seems to be one specific major issue that hasn't been fixed yet - only temporary workaround resets etc. Until they get to the root cause of his power steering problem and fix it, then I'm afraid it's going to remain an ongoing issue. Hopefully it will be something obvious when they properly inspect it.

I picked up my inventoried P100D Model X that was a showroom car with 500 miles on it just last Thursday and although the delivery process itself went smooth, I had problems with the car right from the get go. When I arrived at the delivery center, I was taken to the car and sat in it for the first time. As excited as I was, I turned the car on and immediately, the first problem arose: No audio. Delivery specialist took the car around to service and 15 minutes later, it came back out and audio worked fine. I continued to inspect the entire vehicle and everything looked good except for a small nick in the drivers side door near the edge of the door. Delivery specialist touched it up and I was satisfied. I had planned on wrapping the entire car anyway. Signed the paperwork and off I went. Drive home was great, everything was functional and had my first taste at Autopilot. I was hooked. Got home, parked it in my garage, plugged it in and all was great. I couldn't wait to drive it the next day.

The next day I took it to work and that's when things started to happen. First was the tire pressure monitors came up indicating 3 of the 4 tires were at 37psi. They were all at 42 psi when I picked it up the day before. It was a little cold out so I filled the tires back up and warnings went away. Chalk it up to the change in temperature.(I am in NE PA) Moving on...Later during the drive, I got a warning pop up that said "Car needs service, steering assist reduced." I thought, what now? The vehicle drove fine except that autosteer was disabled. Still had cruise control. Googled it and found many experienced this exact warning and all was needed was a reboot. I called the service center and they told me to do the same thing: Reboot the system. Pushed on brake and hold the 2 scroll wheels in and car rebooted. Warning went away and off I continued with my day.

I got home that night and plugged the car in again. The next morning I got in the car and the warning came back up. Called the service center again and after being on hold for 18 minutes, someone finally answered and ran diagnostics on the car. They saw the errors and told me that the car had been trying to download a firmware update for the past 11 days. I told the advisor that I've only had the car for 4 days up to that point. He told me to check the wi-fi when I went home and see if it downloads the latest firmware. I did just that when I got home and the firmware updated successfully. I now had 2018.34.1 3dd3072.

The next day I went to take the car to get the windows tinted. I dropped off the car and when it was done, my tint guy called and said that the car had no power steering. I didn't believe him. He dropped it off to me and everything seemed fine except for that "Car needs service, steering assist reduced" warning was still there. I was at work so before I went back in to work, I tried a hard reset twice but to no avail. Warning was still there. A few hours later, I got done work and got in my car, put it in drive and wouldn't you know.... no power steering. At this point I was extremely frustrated to say the least. Called the service center again and they created a ticket and scheduled a mobile tech to come and fix it. Still holding my patience at this point, I googled "Model X loss of power steering." Sure enough, there were many others that experienced this and the temporary solution was to power down the car, wait a few mins, then power back up. I did this and it worked, the power steering was back. Drove it home, parked and plugged it in for the night.

Not gonna bore you anymore but after 2 more days of the same thing happening, the temporary fix no longer worked. I now can't get the power steering to work anymore and the car is an absolute bear to drive. Only positive thing I can say is that my biceps seem to have gotten bigger with the workout I am getting manual steering this car. I am beyond frustrated and beginning to second guess my decision to buy this $150k plus vehicle. Not to mention how embarrassing it was to take top level executives for a ride in my car and not have power steering.

So I have an appointment tomorrow morning (9/13) at the service center that is an hour away and I am supposed to drive this car without power steering. I am not looking forward to that drive. Oh I almost forgot, there is something rolling around in the passenger side door that sounds like a marble rolling back and forth as I accelerate and decelerate. That should make the drive even more enjoyable.

I'll keep everyone posted on what happens tomorrow but for right now....I HATE THIS CAR!!!
Funny you say you hear something rolling around in your passenger side door. Mine has something rolling around in it too.

Ask that they tow it. Tell them you do not feel safe driving the car without power steering.

My Dodge Ram power steering went out when the truck was very new. Made a huge mess on the drive. I made them tow it :)

Edit to add - they gave me a hard time. But I told them it felt dangerous. I Asked them to state in writing they would be responsible if I was in an accident.
As for feeling safe or not... kinda on this note, there was this recall: https://www.usnews.com/news/nationa...-trucks-worldwide-over-power-steering-failure. So, it met the bar to either GM and/or NHTSA that (intermittent) power steering failures were safety recall class. I guess thirty accidents supposedly attributed to that issue helped...

What's likely is there is a single failure somewhere causing the major problem - and once Tesla repairs or replaces the affected component, things should get much better.

If this was happening to many owners, the forums would be flooded with complaints like this. Unfortunately all manufacturers encounter a small percentage of owners with this type of problem after delivery...

My Dodge steering actually starting dying pulling a boat+trailer on the Apache Trail in AZ.

(not my video)

Saved enough PS fluid to make a mess of the drive once home.

I hate the key fob right now but my P100D car is a monster to drive despite the axle shimmy TESLA refuses to acknowledge.

[EDIT] - just saw your comment on faulty ground... I hope that your issues are resolved...

Sounds like you got a lemon. Invoke the lemon law of your state and get your money back.

Then buy another one or another car brand entirely.

I hear your pain and I feel for you.

Maybe that car was sent back to Tesla for a reason.

Best,

T

It’s a different type of car, so the faults or issues that arise are different too. Most of which are first time experiences. It can be frustrating. The service centers do well to try and make your service need a one time deal. They do not want “come backs”. Iron out a few bumps and most likely overnight it’ll turn back into the best car you’ve ever owned. Good luck

I just got home after an hour drive and so far everything is working as advertised. Autopilot, autosteer, and power steering are functioning and the loose "clip" in the passenger side door panel was removed. When I first got in the car there was a notification of a firmware update available. I scheduled it for later tonight but wondering why they didn't install it while it was there. Nonetheless, I will see how it drives tomorrow before I bring myself to be excited again. Thanks everyone for their input and well wishes.

When you have service, they typically trigger the latest software to install.

I think they just don’t want a car sitting around for 30-120 minutes that can’t be moved.
