OBDII Scan Tool for S

Looking for any cool toy/add-on that I can get for the S and found this:

Question is: do i really need it? I mean, would it give me any "non-tech" info that would be useful to me? I don't want any numbers/graphs that would be meaningless... Not a techie! I define useful as "date of trip, power used, distance, etc"

If this doesn't work on Tesla, is there another scan tool?

I don't believe there's much at all you can get over the OBDII port, but there is a hidden diagnostics port that work with an OBDII reader and a special cable, along with special software. See here:

Be sure to read the threads at the link to find out what hardware you need. Not just any reader will work

Also you might want to look into the REST API:

Model S REST API

It's the API that the Tesla iOS and Android apps use to talk to tesla.com. I believe there are several third party tools that will collect the information you are interested in. I'm not really familiar with those tools, so maybe someone else can chime in about that. (I am somewhat familiar with the API, just not with the public third party tools that use it.)
