Odd pattern on windshield

Just noticed this odd pattern on my windshield this morning after the 44.30 update.

It hasn’t been out of the driveway for at least a couple days. Any clues? I have never seen that pattern before even in the worst of weather!

After I typed my last post, realized it’s currently 31 outside. White is ‘22, MSM is ‘21.

Both cars were woken up just before pictures. Just went out about 35 minutes later and no defrosting in either location.

Interesting to note as far as frost goes, heated wiper park isn’t an issue. The frost line stops before the wiper blade. Should be much more useful with snow.

@andaconda Do you have any cold weather settings activated? Or scheduled departure? Or security features? Seems odd that my car with interior at 31 hasn’t activated the heating loops.

No, I did not have any features activated. Just took place after a major software update.

Ha! I was just about to post my own thread on this subject and stumbled on this thread.

I observed the exact same snow melt pattern on the windshield of my 2018 Model 3 last night after parking in a light snow for ~30 minutes. (Photo below.)

I've seen snow melt in front of the camera before, but never seen anything like this where it wraps around the top and the side. And I've seen plenty of photos online showing the camera area heated and melting snow on 3s and Ys, but none that I can find show this perimeter area melting.

Why would there be heating elements there in the first place? And why would I have only seen this for the first time after 3.5 years of ownership now?
  • Sentry mode was not on.
  • Software: 2021.44.30.21.
  • FSD Beta enabled.
  • Also (possibly relevant), my car has developed a mild case of insomnia since the last software update 4 days ago where it takes 1-2 hours to fall asleep instead of the usual 10-15 minutes. I've previously observed similar insomnia issues in the days following prevoius software updates.

(The creepy red glow is because I was parked in front of an Ace Hardware. And you might notice that there's one tiny imperfection in the otherwise smooth perimeter of the melted area near the top corner of the windshield. That's because I touched the melted area with my hand to see if it was warm to the touch. It was slightly warm.)
