Recently took the car (2.0 Sport) out of storage and was updating my OVMSV3.1 to the latest firmware. After upgrade, as soon as I plug it into the car, I get the communication error on the VDS and pop-up notification on the OVMS app. Of course, I disconnect right away and the message goes away. Car runs and charges fine. the OVMS was working fine before I upgraded the firmware.
I didn't write down the previous version of firmware.

I tried both 3.2.018 and 3.3.002

Only thing connection different is I added the ODB2 dongle (OVMS V3 HUD / OBD II-F Cable) and replaced original cable to the OVT1. My OVMS is V3.1 with the 3G modem and no k-line module.

Anyone else run into something like this?

Also, has anyone got a BT ELM327 ODB2 to work with this? Trying to connect it to my Hudway Drive HUD.

I even tried factory reset a few times as well as OTA upgrade.

If you use the new cable, AND have an OBD2 module attached, there is conflict in the use of the CAN3 bus. The old cable set only had it plumbed to the OBD side, where the new one passes it through to the car as well. The OBD2ECU facility uses CAN3 to talk to the OBD device, but that communication isn't understood or tolerated by the car.

To fix this you need to modify the cable to remove that conflict. I think there are instructions in the documentation somewhere...

That make sense. Let me do more digging with the documentation to see what I find.
Out of curiosity for a totally newb question, config sent through the shell, is it modifying anything on the vds directly/permanently or is it only stored in the ovms and sent the request as needed. Once unplugged, it reverted back to default. I'm referring to the Tesla portion of the documentation of available config toggles ie. cooldown.templimit etc.

It shouldn't leave any lasting effects, but clearly the car doesn't like what it was seeing on the CAN bus, and the two need to be separated. The combination of the new cable and the use of the OBD application is kind of a corner case, which was uncovered well after the original design was made.

The intent is for the OVMS to monitor and mirror what the VDS sees. There are a few carefully chosen commands that it can issue to the car (lock / unlock the doors, start charging, etc.) but mostly it tries to be passive. Separately, the OBD stuff is an independent process that acts like an ECU, responding with the metrics data on CAN3 (default) to requests from an OBD device such as a head-up display.

Suggestions:
  1. Only use server v2 protocol (not v3 mqtt).
  2. Make sure TLS is OFF for server v2.
  3. In general, leave the settings at defaults.
  4. Don't leave an App/Client connected all the time (usually only an issue for automation systems).
I have seen cases where people living in very marginal cellular conditions get a lot of disconnects/reconnects driving up data usage - but that is normally very visible from the hologram / cellular provider usage reports (as a huge number of very short lived connections).

You can message me the output of 'module summary' to check your settings if that would help.

Thank you.
I use Server v2. I just turned off TLS.
The rest is default, though I did also change the power management settings for the model to off after 1 hour (I want it primarily as a theft tracker)
Where do I find the 'module summary'?

Any way to force the modem off when Wifi is available and On when Wifi is not?
I have bad reception at home and that may cause issues:

The default settings should already do that (only update every 10 minutes or so), and the updates are tiny. Those 1MB and 2MB sessions lasting a few hours make no sense.

Please email (or PM) me the output of 'module summary' (go to the shell, and type in that command).

As a few have asked about this, I have finished a video we have been working on:


You can follow the general idea of that video, but use 'power cellular off' and 'power cellular on' as the script commands.

I get unrecognised command for this as well
I'm trying to switch between wifi and cellular communication to no avail. If I try to activate my cellular modem while connected to wifi it just hangs and seems to connect to the network but no data transmits....would be nice to have data switch back and forth when I leave for a drive. I tried turning simcom on and wifi off but that just hangs OVMS and I have to reboot it.

I got the impression from Mark awhile ago one has to use one or the other.

There are low level developer commands. Better to use the standard power control commands. You can use ‘power ?’ to see the options.
