I think we should promote EV-friendly businesses wherever possible so here's a thread to post them in.
Excellent idea. How easy is it to create a Google Maps category for this sort of thing?

it's possile in openstreetmap
Unfortunately, OpenStreetMap is very restrictive when it comes to licensing the data for third parties to use. If you'd like some history then please review the OSM legal talk list here;

http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

Or our comments on supporting charge points here;

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Talk:Proposed_features/Charging_station

These restrictions are one of the main reasons why we decided to develop our own database for the OpenChargeMap project. We are trying to encourage Governments and automakers to use the same database and they won't support restrictive or proprietary databases.

You are correct that OSM are changing both the database license and the contributor terms. Unfortunately, the new license (ODbL) still has "Share-Alike" requirements which is unacceptable to many websites and apps that have commercial aspirations.

My plan is to provide an interface between OSM and OpenChargeMap in the hope that we can prevent OSM from creating another proprietary charge point database... we already have more than 50 databases worldwide and the last thing we need is another...

Well I hope you are successful. It seems the more EV drivers I meet (which is a lot) they all have chargers they know about that are not on any map.
