Updates come directly to your car and do not use your cell phone data. The car has its own cell phone data plan, the first four years of which are included in the price of your car. You car can also connect to a wifi network and get its firmware updates that way.

thanks...so simple, no wonder it's not discussed much.
btw- what happens in dark territory? the wide open spaces in the desert where there is no cell phone coverage?

If you don't have wifi or cellular coverage you can't get software updates, internet radio, or the google maps on the touchscreen. However, navigation is stored on-board so you can still get directions. The map on the dash will show up, but the map on the 17" touchscreen will just have a blue line with no map data.

hmmm. perhaps I keep my garmin a bit longer. or-perhaps in a few years the cell coverage on the big highways will have the gaps in filled.

yep...I8 from Eloy past Gila Bend to Yuma. Coverage from Sprint was very spotty, Verizon better but still had miles and miles of dark territory. Don't know about El Paso to ft Stockton, but would not be surprised.

today I'm in France so Google shows up in a language I am struggling with. I hope that my M3 will run google maps and partake in this online/offline thing. as I followed the above link - looks like this product just came out May 2016. but my French could mislead me.

I-8 should have coverage no problem, if the car uses AT&T which I believe it does.

You won't need it. The map on the big screen needs cell coverage, or wifi tethering to your phone, but the car has a built-in navigation system in the dash that works without a connection. Then again, I guess the Model 3 doesn't have a dash screen but in all likelihood it will have off-line navigation too.

Even without coverage the Model S and X still have navigation and a map on the dash, it's just the big touchscreen map that doesn't load--of course the Model 3 doesn't have a dash screen, so who knows what the plan is. I guess we'll have to wait until reveal 2.0.

Edit: Just read Canuck's post who said pretty much the exact same thing hah.
