My order for a new MS was confirmed last night. The delivery date was updated to late December or January 2017. Any idea how realistic it would be to get the car in December of this year? Does Tesla ever deliver early? I really want to get the car in 2016 to claim the federal tax credit this year.

Delivery will depend on what model you ordered, wheels, battery size, color, your location, and how perfect it comes off the line.
If remedial work is needed to pass inspection, it could be delayed.
If Tesla cannot send a full truck or rail to your location it may be delayed.
If the weather impedes delivery, it may be delayed.
Your delivery specialist will track these items and more, and will have a better ETA as your car works itself through the system.
Just as you are eager to get delivery this year, Tesla will also be eager to get it to you before the end of the year to have it count in this years financials.

I'm in the same boat - hoping for December to take advantage of tax rebate. Also would make a nice Christmas present.
I ordered an S60D, Pearl White, 19" wheels.
My delivery specialist told me that there is a high probability the car will come in late December. His manager claims that Tesla ramps up deliveries at the end of the quarters. I reiterated to him how important it was for me to get my vehicle this calendar year...so let's see what happens.

I'm not so sure if I like the idea of ramping up the deliveries. It COULD mean lousy quality check...

Our order was confirmed October 18
Originally car was scheduled for November or early December, after adding enhanced auto pilot it changed to December
Then it changed back to November - early December
As of today it has changed again
Now December - early January
So who knows

Mine says late December - January but based on Elon's comments with regards to shooting for another profitable quarter, I'm hopeful we will see delivery in December.

Sorry, but I just don't feel that bad for you. You're getting the exact car I would order if money were no object and the first part of your wait allowed you to get the AP2.0 hardware, a bit of serendipity there.
