Ordering online: trade-in estimate

Toronto:

I'm about to order a model X.
Got very low estimate for my trade-in when I did a test drive at Lawrence location.
The estimate was 2K lower than a "low price" canadian black book value.
My car is in perfect condition with very low mileage and no accidents.

I'm wondering what happens when someone puts an order online instead of a delearship?
During the online ordering process they ask if I'm going to trade-in my car.
Did anybody go through this process in Toronto area?
How do they do the trade-in estimate for online orders?
Will I get a call from the same Lawrence location (closest to me) asking to come over for the estimate or will there be some other process?

Thank you!

They ask you a series of questions about the car and then ask for a set pictures from specific angles. They send that info to whatever third party they are using and then come back to you with a figure.
That wasn't my experience.

They asked the basics about the car (vin, kms etc ) and then wanted to check it out in person. Mine was a tesla model s so perhaps that's why it's different.

The price they offered was reasonable.

Basically it was similar to market value when you factor in HST offset. I'm sure I could have sold it for a fee grand more open market but then when you factor in losing HST offset, and the fact that I'd have to talk to and meet with a dozen strangers about my car and waste a bunch of time...no thanks. I just traded it in.

My car is Audi A6. Will see how it will go with online ordering. Hopefully I'll get a better value from that "other" company.

Now I'll need to find an unused referral code to get the free supercharging and some credit (500 or 700$ - not sure exactly)...

Tesla only deals with trade-in’s to accommodate a sale. They wholesale out trades so the 2k lower for an A6 is probably close to the spread between wholesale and retail. You could do better privately if the difference is worth the hassle.

Trade Ins

Trade Ins

Tesla accepts trade-ins towards the purchase of a Tesla in most states. To obtain a quote, log into your Tesla Account to submit your current vehicle information, or contact your Owner Advisor or Delivery Experience Specialist. Tesla will help coordinate an in-person vehicle inspection before providing you with an official trade-in offer. Quotes and offers are usually valid for a limited amount of time or miles driven.

Our trade-in values are typically lower than those quoted online for private party sales. The difference is intended to cover the cost of selling your trade-in to another buyer.

That's right, I know it's going to be lower than a private sale.
Black book gives a range for trade in with the higher range value to be approaching the private sale value. The range is about 5-6K in my case.
Tesla gave me estimate that was 2K lower than black book lower end which was in my case about 7K lower than what a private sale would be.
I'm perfectly fine when a trade in value is about 3K lower than a private sale would be for a car in a perfect condition with low mealage, but 7K is too much...

I found the trade in value to be very low. But generally dealers lowball on trade-ins.

True. Conventional dealers lowball trades, mark them up and put them used car lots. Tesla doesn't. Teslas trade in value is low as Tesla will only offer you what a wholesaler will give them for it. Your trade is gone the day you turn it in.
The only used cars Tesla sells are used Tesla’s.

So long as you're factoring the 13% of additional savings of the trade-in you won't be paying in HST, and the numbers don't work for you, then great. I had a similar discrepancy but it all worked out with the HST savings. Private selling cars is definitely a pain

Hi Tony_YYZ, did you go through this process? How was the price they sent you?

I just went through the pricing process. Haven't traded it in yet. But I'll likely have to go through it again since the quote is only valid for 30 days.

The price they offered me was within about $1000 of what I was looking to get privately, after you took the HST advantage into it. My car is a 2009 model as well.

Just wanted to thank you everybody who sent me their codes!
Just placed an order with one of them (I've contacted the referring person).

The strange thing is that the system does not accept VIN of my trade-in in my account. Gives me an error that VIN is invalid.
I guess I'll need to contact somebody at Tesla regarding this problem...
