Oregon Superchargers (location speculation, discussion)

In 2013 my wife and I drove our, then new, MS P85 from the SF bay area up 5 to Portland, then over to Yellowstone, down to Denver, over to Kansas City. Then back to Denver, down to Albuquerque, over to the Grand Canyon, then Vegas and home again.
We drove 5540 miles total over 3 weeks. We charged mainly at RV parks! We only hit 4 superchargers along the way. One in Roseville on the way up and 3 in SoCal on the way home. It was sometimes a bit stressful but we did it! We had a blast though!

Supercharger Voting is live again and Florence OR is currently sitting at #9 nationally. Going off the previous round winners the top 5 sites get pursued for construction. Florence is approximately 150 votes shy of the top 5, and is the closest to top 5 status of the 6 locations in the PNW.

If you haven't voted yet please consider doing so immediately. Additionally you may vote with each Tesla account you have, so if you have voted but your spouse/child/parent have not yet, please have them do so(or if you control their login credentials).

I know there are many routes that need supercharger locations in the PNW, but this is an opportunity to get one into the Top 5 and get a needed one built.

With upcoming Coos Bay, what route is incomplete without Florence? Newport to Coos Bay is 98 miles which is 37% of a LR MY, should be doable in most other models. Eugene to Newport is also 37%. Eugene to Coos Bay is 42%. If you are vacationing in Florence, you will need to go through one of these SC to get to Florence. Yes, it is a nice convenience but even 120V charging overnight while you are vacationing should give you enough buffer to get back to a SC. A good L2 network in Florence would be helpful to ensure topping of and getting back to a SC. 1000A of 480V 3 phase (8 stalls) is enough for at least 50 60A HPWC.

True unless you are towing a camper along the coast which will happen a lot more when CT comes out.

Please see in Sig the ----> 2016 Model X. There are still a fair few of the older vehicles running around. New EPA range was only 257mi (downhill, with the wind at your back). With reasonable degradation, and following the 80% 10% guideline, the real world range of older gen cars is around 125-150 miles. And although Coos Bay is coming, Bandon is still a mandatory stop whether coming from or going north today. I've spent alot of time there, I can assure you there is nothing of note to enjoy at the Bandon supercharger.

As things stand today, if the Bandon SC went down it would cut off travel south along the Oregon coast for older gen cars. The same was true for the Lincoln City SC heading north before Newport opened.

And from a purely practical standpoint a SC in Florence almost perfectly bifurcates Oregon's section of Hwy 101, and sits at the juncture of a major route into the valley(OR126). This would allow almost any of the original S & X's (again assuming reasonable battery degradation) to traverse the entire Oregon coast with a single charging stop, as well as provide a convenient stop for travel to and from Eugene. And as always, more SC's are going to mean, more flexibility in travel and charging decisions. As well as less congestion at the surrounding SC's.

Honestly, Florence would be the perfect spot for a large sutherlin type installation(maybe not sutherlin level but 20+ stalls). The casino off of 126 would be the logical choice for an installation. There are also a couple of vacant lots just outside of the historic old town area that could work.

As a final note, the walled garden is about over, other manufacturers are going to start using SC's. We are going to need as many plugs in as many places as we can get. So please vote. ;)

While I agree with you in theory and your personal case, I think Tesla is building out the network for the current cars they are selling. How many of those older cars have unlimited supercharging? How many of those would Tesla like replaced with new cars with pay per use supercharging? (Hint, the answer is 100%). If leaving 100 mile gaps pushes people to buy newer cars, that’s a win win for Tesla. It doesn’t make sense for them to put in new V3/V4 stations for older cars that can’t use the increased speed. It doesn’t make sense for them to cater to a very small percentage of their current customers.

I think you are actually missing the central point of my original post entirely. Florence is currently one of 6 potential SC locations in the PNW that you can currently vote for. The Florence SC location is the only one within the top 10 and the only one with a reasonable chance of taking one of those top 5 spots to get pursued for installation. As a PNW supercharging thread it would behoove members of this thread to try and secure a new supercharger in the PNW regardless of its location. The more superchargers in the region the better. Those top 5 vote getters are going to be pursued weather in the PNW or not, so we as owners in the PNW should try to secure a new supercharger if we can. Securing one of those top spots is not going to divert any funds away from another needed installation as the top 5 are getting built regardless. And as I stated above, the only one in the running in the PNW is Florence. So I again ask people in the PNW(or who just want a SC in Florence) to Please Vote.

As far as unlimited supercharging is concerned, please remember those that have it, paid exorbitant prices for their vehicles at a time when Tesla was a niche automaker. They essentially bank rolled the build out of the supercharger network and the development of the newer more affordable cars. That very small percentage of customers(as you put it) are the reason Tesla grew into the company it is today. They took a chance and bought, very expensive, vehicles that initially had very few locations where they could redeem that unlimited supercharging.

And again, Tesla is opening up the network to non Tesla vehicles. The charging network is being converted into a major revenue stream for the company and more locations are coming. We will see expansion of the SC network to dwarf the current system. There will be a supercharger in Florence, for many of the reasons I listed above(juncture of 2 major hwys, half way down the coast, half way between existing SC's, link to the coast from Oregon's 3nd most populous metro area). One will eventually be built, it might as well be now, when we have a chance to influence the outcome by voting.

Update: Florence has moved into the #8 position and needs 125 votes to move into position #5.

PS I like the picture of your dogs. They look like 'very good boys'.

I didnt miss that at all, just pointing out how Tesla might be thinking. The fact that it has to be crowd sourced and voted on versus all these other new stations that Tesla decides on based on hard data means that it isn't at the top of their list. This is a feel good freebie on their part. Everyone gets excited and votes and a 5 stations per quarter in the US get on the list. Small potatoes. And usually 1+ years out. Look at Kalispell. It has been wanted for years on this forum and it didn't even make the top 5, it had to be thrown in as a bonus site and is scheduled 3 quarters out from when it was voted.

I agree, the more votes the better and for most of the reasons you stated, some we will disagree on. Cheers!
