Oregon Temporary Registration - 2x 21 day Trip Permits?

Hey everyone, kind of an odd question, or maybe not! Sorry for the length.....bear with me here.

My wife and I live in Maine. I'm taking delivery of my X100D in late June in Oregon. Due to work/scheduling issues, my wife and I are then flying back out on July 7 and driving it back home to Maine as part of a road trip vacation over the next 3 weeks. True coast to coast, and a total of about 35+ days without permanent registration.

I found on the Oregon BMVs site that they issue up to 2 temporary "trip permits" good for 21 days each, but I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with this. Will they issue 2 at once, so I can use them back to back? Since they last for 21 days, and the first one will run out half way home, I would need to make sure they can be used back to back. My home state of Maine only offers 10 day permits, so that's not an option. Anyone ever crossed into Canada with a temporary registration, did they give you any hassle?

My DS has been awesome about it so far and is, but I thought I'd ask to see if anyone had some insight. I'm one of those OCD people that likes to have all my bases covered so there are no surprises along the way.

My other option, and one that is looking more likely, is just taking delivery a bit sooner, and registering at home before we even go on the trip. In this case I'm assuming I can get all the paperwork and plates in time for the trip....I don't think this will be a problem, but weird things happen. In the event that I couldn't get the plates in time, I'd have to fall back to the temp Oregon reg option above.

Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance for the help!

I live in WA and took deliver in WA, but I just recently took a 35 day road trip in a new Model S with WA temporary tags. In my case, the temporary tags were valid for about 40 days, so I got back before they expired. Going into Canada was no problem. You get a temporary registration that you can keep in your glove box. I was proactive at the border and just had this out and ready to show them but they didn't seem to care about it too much in either direction.

I did get pulled over twice for basically no reason, once in CA and once in LA. This is most likely due to the fact that temporary registration goes in the back window in WA and the fact that the window of the Model S is tilted quite a bit. Many other states place temporary tags where the license plate normally goes.

The CA cop flat out told me that he pulled me over because he didn't see any license plate or temporary tag. I asked him if it was in the proper place and if I should move it. He said it was in the proper place and he just didn't see it. At that point, I asked him if I was free to go and he said no and insisted on running my license. I'm fairly sure this was not legal as he didn't have a valid reason for the traffic stop, but I have no warrants out so he let me go after running it.

The Louisiana cop claimed I was speeding but he clearly was not using a radar gun or anything like that and just estimating my speed. I may have been going 2 or 3 mph over the speed limit, but was definitely not speeding in any typical sense. He brought up the temporary tag immediately and said that he couldn't see it initially so I'm pretty sure that was the real reason for pulling me over. He was a real dick, took me out of the car, asked to search the car over and over again (I said NO of course) and kept asking me the same questions over and over again (purpose of trip, where am I going, what do I do for a living, etc.). I guess he ran my license through whatever system they have and typed in the number wrong so it was coming up as invalid. He probably though I gave him a fake license or something. Anyways, it was resolved quickly after the second cop came and they let me go.

So bottom line is, you can expect to be hassled by cops (this is true of road trips in general, but moreso with temporary tags), but there is nothing wrong or illegal about travelling all over the continent on temporary tags.

I'm not familiar with the system in Oregon, but why do you need temporary "trip permits?" Don't the temporary tags last for a month or more?

Also, in my case, Tesla sent the license plates to my permanent address within a couple weeks, so if I wanted to stay out on the road longer, I could have had my mother (she was picking up my mail) send them to me wherever I was and I could have installed them at that point. This is a little complicated but could be an option. It helps of course if you are staying in one place for at least 2-3 nights.

Trip permits have the dates they are good for written/printed on them. I'm pretty sure that you can request a start date for the trip permit. (But it has been a while since I have had to get a trip permit.)

You could always try calling them and seeing if you can get the details: 503-299-9999 (Hold times can be long.) ;)

I like this part: "If Oregon DMV has no record of the vehicle, provide a copy of your insurance card or policy, registration card, sales contract, or a pencil tracing of the vehicle identification number;" Somehow I don't think manufacturers use raised printing on the VINs anymore.

Thanks for sharing your experience MP3Mike, definitely seems like there are always some police officers who are having a bad day....lol Oregon does 21 day temp registrations, and my home state of Maine is only good for 10 days. My delivery specialist is trying some options including getting 2 Oregon trip permits back to back, or some extended CA temporary registration. We'll see. If all else fails, he said we can probably get the necessary paperwork faster so I can register at home after delivery, but before we take the trip. Sounds like my DS is all over it and definitely willing to do some leg work to make it happen....impressed so far!

I'll post an update if anything groundbreaking happens with regards to my situation.
